Project idea, need people lazarus / 38-Networking and Web Programming ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thierrydijoux · 2012-02-13 09:36 Hi all, I've written a bunch of classes to generate Jquery UI from lazarus, and now i want to code a kind of dropbox clone in lazarus. This is a big project, and i need some volunteers to help me. if anyone is interrested, leave a message here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-02-13 15:08 Before I can decide to join or not, I need to know your motivation. Dropbox is already doing good job, so what distinguishing features you'd like to make? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil · 2012-02-13 15:09 Please provide more information. What you've given doesn't say much. For example, Dropbox clients use a REST API over HTTP to copy files to and from the Dropbox server. What does jQuery have to do with that? Thanks. -Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thierrydijoux · 2012-02-13 15:19 Thanks for you replies. to Phil: i know that, and i'd like to implement this kind of services, but as i've already said, it's a lot of work. For Jquery, it's simlpy to have a nice UI and a "rich internet application" to Leledumbo: my first motivation is to have my own service what i mean is to have my own dedicated server at home (with raid capabilities) and having access to my files where ever i'am. I want to sync them and share them with peoples. And if you have any ideas, you're welcome ! Hope to answers your questions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil · 2012-02-13 15:28 Again, I don't see where the "rich Internet application" fits in. Dropbox clients are native apps for Windows, OS X, iOS, etc. Note that you can program against the Dropbox API yourself to get everything you list except storing on your own server. Thanks. -Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-02-13 15:34 And I don't see that as a benefit over dropbox. Dropbox already allows file synchronization between clients and they have reliable server(s). Most people (including me) wouldn't want to own a server (too expensive for self use) that I have to configure and manage myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phil · 2012-02-13 15:40 Quote from: Leledumbo on February 13, 2012, 04:34:24 pmAnd I don't see that as a benefit over dropbox. Right, that's kind of the point - let somebody else maintain a copies of your files offsite so you have some redundancy. Thanks. -Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thierrydijoux · 2012-02-13 15:41 I understand your point of view, thanks for your interest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-13 15:50 Quote from: Phil on February 13, 2012, 04:28:18 pmAgain, I don't see where the "rich Internet application" fits in. And Thierry, perhaps there would be more interest in having a collaborative Lazarus/FPC documentation files editor that is accessible with a browser - there's been some discussion on it lately in the FPC and Lazarus mailing lists... Good luck with your projects, that demo you have looked beautiful and nice and responsive... Not sure why someone would want to use that over the native client, which monitors the user's local Dropbox folder and server files and, if it detects a change, starts the syncing in the background. Same with iCloud. Plus you can add syncing capabilities to you own apps with Dropbox and iCloud. Thanks. -Phil ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-13 16:13 Hi Phil, Getting off topic, but why not, I'll get it off my chest Actually, I prefer working with the web application rather than yet another Windows explorer shell plugin that can crash and which I only use some of the time... then again, everybody's needs are different (At heart, I think I'm a curmudgeonly old fart who is secretly still amazed he's got more than 64 kilobytes to play with) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-02-14 02:53 QuoteAnd Thierry, perhaps there would be more interest in having a collaborative Lazarus/FPC documentation files editor that is accessible with a browser - there's been some discussion on it lately in the FPC and Lazarus mailing lists... Exactly... has anything been started?
