Not sure if it is same as windows.
in windows i override an end session message from the main form:

ie.

uses forms, messages;

TForm.procedure WMQueryEndSession(var Message: TWMQueryEndSession);
message WM_QUERYENDSESSION;

begin
  cleanupgracefully;
end;

Will this work in linux?

I'm not sure that all widgetsets have implemented queryEndSession.
Probably with gtk2 it'll work, but I'm pretty sure that qt does not
implement it yet (needs new version of bindings which will be commited
in next few weeks).

Does this mean Linux needs to be updated or freepascal?
How to find out when it might work?

No, you don't need to update fpc or linux because of that, but wait
until it's implemented in all widgesets in lazarus, and then update
lazarus.
