Solved - Lazarus no longer working on Ubuntu 12.04 lazarus / 32-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkorten · 2012-06-26 16:29 A host of issues - mainly the IDE has no idea where the mouse is clicking. But then there appear to be library incompatibilities and file location problems. I'm trying to post as a bug but find no way to enter. It appears I am too dumb for this task. Is this my implementation only? Or have other people come up against this problem too? I tried enabling pre-release and non long term support updates to Ubuntu to see if any recent fixes have been implemented, but no luck. I have tried Unity, Gnome and KDE and have similar results in all (IDE loses the mouse location and clicking ascribed to wrong location). I have tried installing using the long method - and through the Ubuntu Software Center. All the same result. How come I don't see (many) others having this problem? Thanks, Jerry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DirkS · 2012-06-26 22:15 QuoteI'm trying to post as a bug but find no way to enter.Have you tried the bugtracker (see link on the left)? And try tomorrows snapshot. Some changes were done today Dirk - thanks for your suggestion - what is strange to me is that nobody else is complaining about this. I have tried clean installs, manually deleting the FPCSRC directory and using computer janitor between installs to get a clean system. But the behavior of Lazarus is so wrong that if it functions like this on anybody else's computer - they would not be able to use it. At all. So all arrow point to me and my problems. (It's always about me.) Can there be something unique about my system that does not allow Lazarus to install correctly? And if you think there could be - what would you recommend I do? Jerry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-06-27 07:50 You're wrong that nobody else is complaining about this. Check the forum (numerous threads). It was discussed on the Lazarus mailing list yesterday. It's in the bugtracker. Workarounds were posted: set the LIB_OVERLAY (or something, typing this from memory) environment variable) to 0 before starting Lazarus.. Based on the ML discussion yesterday, the Lazarus source code was adapted. You might want to try with a current snapshot (or preferably SVN version) and check if it works for you. I would think information on this has been entered on the wiki as well. Often, also if you have serious problems like this, it helps to search for the symptoms and a solution... such as Martin said. PS: Yes, I think your system is unique... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-06-27 14:02 I have a working Lazarus 0.9.30.2 on Ubuntu 12.04. under Unity. As usual with Lazarus on Ubuntu, installation was problematic and frustrating. 1. It was a fresh Ubuntu install (not an upgrade) 2. At first, I installed Lazarus through the Software Centre and it didn't work (no surprise there). 3. I then checked for Free Pascal. However it is not in the Ubuntu Software Centre. 4. I installed Synaptic and checked for Free Pascal. (I can't remember if it was missing but if it is then install fpc 2.4.4 via Synaptic.) 5. The Free Pascal source code (fpcsrc2.4.4) was definitely missing. I installed it via Synaptic. 6. I then deleted all Overlay-Scrollbars using Synaptic (suggestion from the Lazarus forum). Search on overlay-scrollbar. 7. I then opened a terminal and ran (suggestion from the Lazarus forum)      sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt 8. The location of fpcsrc then has to be entered in Lazarus. To do this, in Lazarus, in Environment/Options/FPC source directory  I entered /usr/share/fpcsrc/$(FPCVER) 9. Reboot Ubuntu for all these effects to become apparent. Observations: 1. Every other program in the Ubuntu Software Centre just runs after you install it. Lazarus never does. 2. Free Pascal and its source should be automatically installed when someone installs Lazarus. Lazarus is no use without them 3. Include the instructions about overlay-scrollbars and the other stuff as a Readme.txt or better still, in the Software Centre description. I hope this may help someone. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-06-27 14:55 Quote from: HappyLarry on June 27, 2012, 04:02:46 pmObservations: 1. Agreed on 2; hope 2 & 1 can also be addressed by the upcoming release. Thanks for posting these helpful notes, BigChimp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bugrit · 2012-06-27 15:52 Quote from: HappyLarry on June 27, 2012, 04:02:46 pmI hope this may help someone. I have recently upgraded from 10.4 to 12.04 and, like you, I have been struggling to get Lazarus up and running again. Also like you, I installed Lazarus via the Software Centre and fpc source via Synaptic and then I encountered the embedded scrollbar problems, again just like you must have done. That was when I came here and found your very helpful post. Lazarus is now running nicely again so your post has indeed helped someone. Thank you very much, kind sir. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mas steindorff · 2012-06-27 19:18 sounds like good wiki food ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkorten · 2012-06-28 16:39 Happy Larry - thanks for your very helpful post. I am now almost all set (boy did I run into a bit of trouble when I tried cleaning my system of every trace of fpc and lazarus to do a clean install. Broke the fpc symbolic link and had to learn how to redo that). But now - alas - I have the "can't locate unit interfaces" and when I go to the project inspector and look at the LCL package - the "interfaces" pp is not a pp but is an XML stating "! interfaces/gtk2/issues.xml" instead. I have not yet figured out how to get around this. My LCL Widget type in Project->Project Options->paths is the default gtk2. Still I can't compile. Any ideas would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-06-29 10:10 I may have had a similar problem on Post 17 here http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,14672.15.html and (to cut a long story short) I tried (in a terminal) gksudo startlazarus and then (in Lazarus) Environment/rescan FPC source directory and somehow it worked. Good luck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jkorten · 2012-07-12 13:25 HappyLarry, Indeed - it took some digging in to the archives to find out how to completely remove all traces of both lazarus  and fpc. I ended up installing synaptic and using the "completely uninstall" option for both. Then I found out how to go and delete all the related directories and related configuration files. Evidently if you had an old config file hanging around, the new compiler would be pointed to the previous fpc library. Or something like this. And that is what caused all the grief. Then I did a clean install also using synaptic as advised and I now have a robust installation of 0.9.30.4-0 on both Linux and Windows and boy am I a happy camper again. Thanks for all the help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marion · 2012-07-16 20:20 Quote from: HappyLarry on June 27, 2012, 04:02:46 pmI hope this may help someone. Thanks HappyLarry! This worked perfectly! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marion · 2012-07-16 20:26 Has anyone here had problems with the dialog boxes working? I have a TOpenDialog that never shows up but the gui of my app acts like there is a modal form open somewhere that isn't visible. *Edit* I found the problem. The width and height of the dialog were set to 0. I changed that and it displays fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marion · 2012-07-16 20:30 New problem with the TOpenDialog. Now that I have the dialog showing, it will not allow me to select any files, and the Cancel button doesn't receive the click event. At least, it doesn't appear to let me click on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chor · 2012-08-15 14:41 Just a side track, I have also installed Lazarus on Ubuntu 12.04LTS. Instead of using the standard distribution via Ubuntu repository, I install the package from Code Typhon. It ran very well. Only issue I have is occasionally it will crash if I use the scroll wheel on my mouse, but I am not sure under what exact condition. Only way out is "xkill".
