problems showing db results in utf8 in widgets

I am accessing a MySQL database (charset=utf8) with TSQLQuery and load
the results into a TStringGrid.
Instead of showing the correct utf8 characters the grid shows the ANSI
equivalent e.g. "Drini i Bardhë  фигури" instead of "Drini i
Bardhë  фигури". I have attached a file which contains the query
results written to a file byte by byte. What am I missing? I would be
very grateful for any help, thank you in advance.
