Charset MariaDB and ZeosLib

Greetings to all.
My name is Paolo and I apologize for my English certainly is not too
good. I was approached by a bit 'of time to programming with Lazarus
and now I'm working with DB, but I have met a first problem. I
searched the net and in the forum, replicable solutions, but I could
not find information, or at least I have not been able to find them,
and for that I apologize.

Here is my situation. I installed the latest releas of xampp (with
MariaDB), I created a DB and its tables with charset UTF8. I installed
on the Lazarus Zeoslib and use the ZEOS components to access the DB.

The problem is: how to avoid that accented letters will be displayed
with "?". I tried various solutions even reading this:

but I have not been able to solve the problem. Can anyone provide step
by step tips to men faced the problems indicated?

What version of Lazarus and ZEOS?

Lazarus version 1.6 and Zeos version 7.1.4-stable.
