Data Modules - not a question lazarus / 16-Databases ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pascaluvr · 2013-04-23 06:27 As i progress further with my learning of Lazarus (no Delphi or OOp Background) - I discovered DataModules.  Its amazing, every time I find a 'solution' to a need, and the query a small issue, i find a solution was there in  another component. My Application has a Database with many related tables.  Rather than have an 'enormous' Form1, I started creating several Forms with the SQL access for each of the accesses i needed.  The forms were never displayed - it was just a way to group the related routines together. By putting the access into a datamodule achieved the same without the confusion of an 'unused' Form.  Not sure if it achieves more in reality, but it certainly seems far 'neater'. My biggest 'complaint' with Lazarus ...   is there is so many components ...   and finding a needed component (for a newbie) ...   usually happens after having a problem re-inventing the wheel. I'll get there eventually - and please dont take this a complaint - its just an  observation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2013-04-23 06:37 I understand how you feel. Please feel free to update the databases wiki documentation... I haven't seen much if anything about datamodules there. OT: So you've gone the OOP path after all instead of low level db access? Good choice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pascaluvr · 2013-04-23 07:06 Quote from: BigChimp on April 23, 2013, 08:37:00 amI understand how you feel. Good choice I'm not sure if I'm qualified to update or create Tut4. but i will create a draft if you would kindly proof read (after I have learnt more from my mistakes   And yes, I am trying to learn the OOP way, but also learning the basics at the low level.  Learning the low level is a great way to understand and learn what the higher level  is doing; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2013-04-23 07:35 Just throw it up there and I'll gladly have a look. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pascaluvr · 2013-04-24 03:51 Quote from: BigChimp on April 23, 2013, 09:35:17 am Just throw it up there and I'll gladly have a look. Good luck! I created a wiki account, but there is nothing obvious, like 'create a new page' - so need your help again BigChimp. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2013-04-24 05:23 Yes, that works a bit strangely (in all wikis). You can just type the name of the page you want to create in the search field, then you'll get an error the page does not yet exist... but you can create the page with that name. For more details: see the main page wiki page, IIRC, there's a link to a wiki guide.
