using tdblookupcombo boxes with 'insert into table ...'

hi
i am stuck. i have a form with a bunch of data entry fields, i want to
use dblookupcomboboxes to get the data from
a list table. this is working fine. My problem is that when the
dblookupcombo value is selected it expects the table
to be open in insert mode. I want to use a parameterized sql INSERT
statement where i can get the user values selected from the
dblookupcombo. I just want to use the lookupcombo as a way to validate
the data and then pass the selected values to the query as params. is
this the right approach. I tried using table1.insert; ... but keep
getting unique index exceptions although the data selected is
distinct.   Any ideas

Do not assign values to datasource and keyfield properties, only
assign for listsource etc this will force the dblookupcombobox to work
inside your specifications.
