MySQL embedded - any one experience with this on the Mac?

I've created a small program on the Windows platform that uses
libmysqld.dll (embedded MySQL).
Now I'd like to port this to the Mac.

I do have the MyDAC MySQL components running under Lazarus on a Mac
just fine (wish that would be a default component for Lazarus/FPC, but
unfortunately it's a commercial product that I use for work).

To use embedded MySQL I would need the Mac's counter part of
libmysqld.dll which is libmysqld.a (appears that way in both the 32
bit version - which I should probably use - and the 64 bit version of
MySQL).
Of course, MyDAC is asking for something else: libmysqld.so.
And then there is the libmysqld.dylib mentioned elsewhere on the web.
I realize there is a difference between dynamic and static libraries.

Is there a way to "convert" libmysqld.a to libmysqld.so, or another
way to use embedded MySQL?
