Please help on meaning of this ... lazarus / 16-Databases ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Elmug · 2012-06-19 18:21 Hi everyone. On Windows 7 I have installed Lazarus and PostgreSQL, 32 bit. All is working fine. I am learning on databases now and have been through most tutorial, info and so on. From a Lazarus tutorial  http://wiki.freepascal.org/Lazarus_Database_Tutorial This is explained: To change contents in the database, I called the DB Engine direct with the following code: try   sql:= 'UPDATE table SET setting=1';   PQDataBase.Connected:=True;   PQDataBase.ExecuteDirect('Begin Work;');   PQDataBase.ExecuteDirect(sql);   PQDataBase.ExecuteDirect('Commit Work;');   PQDataBase.Connected:=False; except   on E : EDatabaseError do     MemoLog.Append('DB ERROR:'+sql+chr(13)+chr(10)+E.ClassName+chr(13)+chr(10)+E.Message);   on E : Exception do     MemoLog.Append('ERROR:'+sql+chr(13)+chr(10)+E.ClassName+chr(13)+ch r(10)+E.Message); end; Where I need the help, at this time,  is in understanding the meaning of 'UPDATE table SET setting=1' I know the statment in the single quotes is the SQL property, and I figure that table is the actual name of the table to be updated. Now SET is the usual SET of the SQL language. But,what is the actual meaning of settings = 1, right after the SET word? Thanks for any help afforded. P.S. I have the tutorial already working, except updating the changes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DirkS · 2012-06-19 18:33 AFAICS 'setting' is a field name in table 'table'. Gr. Dirk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Elmug · 2012-06-19 19:38 Thanks Dirk. I believe you are right. Since no actual table is used in the example, where one could see a column named "setting",  I thought the word "setting" meant to be some sort of parameter passing way, possibly a property of some database object, and that "=1" was part of that.
