what kind of database ? lazarus / 16-Databases ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saxed · 2011-02-03 13:05 Hello, I discovered Lazarus and I ask a question concerning databases: What kind of database choose as a reliable and free solution? Thank you. Cédric. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dibo · 2011-02-03 14:18 Hard to say. Depends on what you need. There is nice (maybe not fresh) article: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Databases And another: http://wiki.freepascal.org/Databases_in_Lazarus And another http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Lazarus_Database_Tutorial ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2011-02-03 20:02 QuoteWhat kind of database choose as a reliable and free solution? All supported DBMSes are reliable, while the free ones are: MySQL (not really if you write commercial apps), PostgreSQL, FirebirdSQL and SQLite. Choose according to your project needs. I use SQLite most of the time because most of my project doesn't have a lot of data, it's FAST, the database file is endian-neutral, and serverless (my apps are usually portable, so this is a requirement). When playing with BIG data, I use PostgreSQL / FirebirdSQL. Firebird has the ability to have its engine embedded, but the database file isn't endian-neutral (not really a problem since I never had an other- than-intel customer). PostgreSQL is used when I need more security and there's a chance that the database might be placed in a server on its own. Use the right tool for the right job ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spirit · 2011-02-03 23:00 Additional question from my side - what kind of database I can use on Windows CE (5.0, ARM CPU) platform? Does anyone has such experience? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2011-02-03 23:29 Quotewhat kind of database I can use on Windows CE (5.0, ARM CPU) platform? To the best of my knowledge, SQLite ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Saxed · 2011-02-05 17:07 Thank you very much to all ! I shall retain a thing : "Use the right tool for the right job". Otherwise, thank you for the links, I think that PostgreSQL and SQLite are good solutions but I am going to analyze all this.... Thank you and good work to you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xenblaise · 2011-02-07 19:49 Don't stop Laz, you'll never regret what you've discovered.
