ZeosLib vs SQLdb lazarus / 16-Databases ---------------------------------------------------------------------- didi · 2009-09-03 21:24 Forgive me if I am asking a questioned thats already been answered. I have searched alot for some sort of comparsion, but found none I have an application that makes some simple SQL selects and updates etc. Everything is done by code with no user interaction, and is aimed at MySQL. My questions are: what are the pros and conns of SQLDB vs ZeosLib? Who maintains SQLDB ? Is there alot of overhead with Zeos ? What about speed difference ? future updates and proofing ? Why is SQLDB the default installation with Lazarus, when Zeos is already out there and works ? Does both need libmysql.dll ? Does any of them have direct connection (i.e. without .dll files and ODBC, ADO etc) ? Where can I find detailed info about SQLDB ? Do both work on Windows and Linux ? Can i execute any valid SQL query with both ? Or do they have internal SQL parsers that can mess things up ? Which is thinner and less buggier ? Any thoughts are appreciated :-) Kind Regards ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrmikehicks · 2009-09-04 08:18 First of all, good luck even installing the SQLite component. You will get a link error with a thousand references that it can't find. The answer is somewhere in specifying to the linker to use the libraries in /usr/lib (least on a mac) That's as far as I could get with it. Putting the /usr/lib in the extra lib path in compiler options doesn't do squat. I did however install the zeoslib component set on a pc (vista) system and it worked well, except when I tried to port my code over to the mac, all of a sudden the mac couldn't find a single library to use for it (really frustrating) But anyway back to your question, I would suggest SQLite (if you can ever get it installed) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrmikehicks · 2009-09-04 08:20 Sorry for my rant about SQLite, I mistook SQLDB for SQLite. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chrnobel · 2009-09-06 21:53 I would so definitely recommend Zeos. It is rock steady. It is much more easy to make connections and queries (In my opinion) - make a connection, enter hostname, user, password, basename etc in the object inspector, make a query, and a datasource, and you are up and running. I don't know if there are any differences when we talk about speed, both are probably on the same level, but to me Zeos feels very fast.  It is very easy to use another database than MySQL with very few changes, if you decide to switch. Zeos works on more or less all platforms. Last but not least, with Zeos the MySQL client library compiles into your program, therefore there is no need for installing the client on the end users machine - the program is 100% self contained. /Christian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- didi · 2009-09-09 18:21 OK guys Thanks for your input. I knew that Zoes is popular, but i just wondered why it was not the "official" pckage coming with Lazarus. I think that I will use Zeos then, and hope it still is supported as Lazarus matures even more Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chrnobel · 2009-09-10 05:58 Quote from: didi on September 09, 2009, 08:21:12 pmI think that I will use Zeos then, and hope it still is supported as Lazarus matures even moreI am almost 100% sure that it will be supported, as it is not a part of Lazarus, and the only thing it requires is that the Zeos team makes a Lazarus package. And as they already takes Lazarus (and FreePascal) serious, then you can be sure that unless Lazarus (or Zeos - but the commitment behind Zeos is strong) vanish from the surface of the earth, then it is also supported tomorrow. You can also use Zeos with MSEide & MSEgui. /Christian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- freddynerk · 2009-09-10 13:01 I am new to Zeos and Sqlite3. Are their any simple examples on using sqlite. I have a simple database up and going but was wondering what the Update function does and how to use this. Tom
