fssql, flashfiler lazarus / 16-Databases ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2007-08-15 06:56 Hello. By googling I have found two interesting free  database engines for Delphi that could serve embedded purposes in Lazarus applications: 1. fssql 2. Turbopower Flashfiler Has anybody already tried to port it in Lazarus? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2007-08-15 08:13 Autor of fssql database engine and components is: krzysztof- winnicki@wp.pl . It seems that the project is abandoned (http://www.winniccy.com/fssql/). How is that possible? We shoudn't be ignorant about possibility that this database engine perfectly matches the need for fast and powerfull embedded database engine for Lazarus! According to information provided on the internet and in the source code, it seems that fssql even supports TRIGGERS and stored procedures! If true, this is great. What do you think, people? Would it be hard to port it to Lazarus? Regards, Zlatko ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ssamayoa · 2007-09-20 18:52 For full embedded database better use Firebird. Why bother with full pascal database? Or just for fun? Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2007-09-21 11:44 Hi! Actually, I'm currently developing a Lazarus application with Firebird embedded. But it works only on Windows...which then anulates cross-platform effect of Lazarus itself... Regards, Zlatko ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ssamayoa · 2007-09-21 23:26 What problems you have? I just back to see if lazarus is feauture and stable enougth to use for an possible OS software. The xplatform is a "nice to have" (not required at this point) but it would be interesting if you tell me what problems you have with FB. Are you using Zeos? I just installed latest version in yesterday's lazarus snapshot and so far I'm impressed with the stability (with minor glitches of course) of this combination. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2007-09-22 10:57 Hi! I didn't say that I have problems. I am satisfied both with current 0.9.22 version of Lazarus (it is very stable and reliable) and Firebird and Zeoslib trunk also. I agree it is stable. I just said that Firebird embedded works only for Windows. Regards, Zlatko ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ssamayoa · 2007-09-22 16:15 AFAIR there was embedded for linux. Just check and you are rigth, there is no embedded server for linux. If you want trully embedded database then I recomend you SQLite. It adds about 300K to your exe. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nelson777 · 2007-09-25 22:14 Well, I haven´t tested it in Linux, but as I´m about to port one of my systems to embedded firebird this is a very important issue to me. There isn´t a downloadable version for Linux in FB´s site, so I did some research and found this: http://sotu.berlios.de/Firebird-Embedded-Linux-HOWTO.html Hope it helps. There´s many posts about embedded firebird in linux in FB´s forums, and in google. As there is many portuguese speaking people around here, I found a link that may be useful. It´s the above text translated to portuguese: http://www.firebase.com.br/fb/artigo.php?id=1754 You have to register first, but it´s free. Nelson ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TurboRascal · 2009-10-05 08:01 I'm also interested in something similar, so not to open a new topic, I post it here. What I'd like to have is exactly what flashfiler offers, and that is the ability to use as both embedded and distributed database. Using sqlite effectively eliminates the possibility of client-server deployment, while using pgsql of FB requires a relatively heavyweight installation and resource usage when used for a standalone application. With flashfiler I see an opportunity to create an easily switchable standalone / client-server application without extensive architecture modifications. FB Embedded does sound interesting, but informations about it are quite obscure, I'm not sure if it can be used the same way as flashfiler. Does anyone have some experience with it, how hard would it be to make an application which can be used with both Embedded and Client-Server versions without drastic modifications in database code? And also the dubious xplatform portability... can someone confirm FBE can really be used for xplatform apps? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- clauslack · 2009-10-05 17:41 In Firebird the client is fbclient.dll (440 kb) In Firebird Embedded, the Sql Server and client are in fbembed.dll that you rename to fbclient.dll.(2700kb - 800 kb with compress with upx) So in your application you don't need change nothing (only the database name and user-password) and this works in Embedded or with Remote Firebird Server. If you want more info Download http://sourceforge.net/projects/firebird/files/firebird- win32/2.1.3-Release/Firebird-2.1.3.18185-0_Win32_embed.zip/download read README_embedded.txt Regards ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2009-10-06 06:32 But, bare in mind that Firebird embedded is Windows only... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TurboRascal · 2009-10-06 11:39 So, it still looks as porting flashfiler to lazarus would be useful, since there is no real alternative... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tatamata · 2009-10-06 12:37 Though, Firebird embedded can be used in Linux, via Wine emulator... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- davesimplewear · 2009-10-07 08:25 :oI used to use flashfiler in delphi when it was available for windows and found it to be a mature and reliable solution, I was looking for a lazarus port so I could use it in linux, if anyone is going to do the port I would be very interested. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TurboRascal · 2009-10-19 17:43 I would gladly port it if I would be able to. I lack experience with Delphi to Lazarus porting and working on components in general though... I might try it, but it might get difficult for me if the code is too much dependent on VCL specifics, or worse, on Win32 API. If someone is willing to help me with that, I'd give it a shot... Btw. the talk about FBE, reminded me of an old idea to implement a subset of Win32 API (nonvisual), using winelib on linux, to help porting stuff... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bluehare · 2012-10-11 19:10 Substitute DB for Wintypes and Winprocs. I tried this on btfiler and it works!
