unable to validate varable defined in object

If I try to watch a variable defined in object public (or private)
section debugger reports class has no component.
What settings for GBD are needed to see such varialbles?

I followed the Debugger setup hint (by the way, the screen shots do
not match to lazarus 1.2.6 ide I use ...), but no success.
I come from Delphi, the debugger integrated in delphi is able to
dereference variable and property defined in public and /or private
section of an object, so I miss this heavy in lazarus.
I cannot provide you a code example of my project, it is to complex
and big (I have converted over the last month a delphi project to
lazarus with ~ 27 Units), but be Informed that I use Delphi (and Turbo
Pascal) since Turbo Pascal 3.0 running on a Commodore 128 CP/M OS, so
I am not a newbie ...
