I can't open the watch window when I add a variable to in Free Pascal.

View -> Debug Windows -> Watches

(It's my own translation of my Dutch menu items, so don't hold it
against me if it is called slightly different).

It should open on it's own, if you add a watch.

Anyway, try the menu.

If that still fails, which version of Lazarus do you use?

Maybe it is displayed off screen? (IIRC 0.9.31 snapshots have code to
force it on screen but 0.9.30 may display it off screen)
Use the "Options" dialog (Menu Environments or Tools), section
"Window", to check the coordinates.

I can confirm that - at least in my Windows version (see below) - the
watch window does not automatically open when an expression is added
to it.  Only the menu item (or pressing CTL-ALT-W) does that. 
On OS X adding a watch first gives you the watchlist where you can
manipulate your expressions, but on Win there immediately is just the
"Watch Properties" dialog, without the watchlist.
