Native Pascal Debugger? lazarus / 12-Debugger ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wodzu · 2009-12-15 11:42 Hi guys. I know that today we don't have a native debugger. I know how hard task is to make one which would work on all platforms. My question is: does anyone work on it? I was browsing this forum and FPC forum and couldn't find the answer. Regards ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-12-15 12:04 there're at least 2 native debuggers: 1st) FPdebugger (win32/win64), available at Lazarus/debugger 2nd) http://sourceforge.net/projects/duby ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jetchengchu · 2009-12-15 12:23 @skalogryyz  Thank you but could you please tell us in a clearer way how to obtain FPdebugger?  What location does Lazarus-slash-debugger refer to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-12-15 12:25 Quote from: Jetcheng Chu on December 15, 2009, 01:23:14 pm@skalogryyz  Thank you but could you please tell us in a clearer way how to obtain FPdebugger?  What location does Lazarus-slash-debugger refer to? It's located (and distributed) with Lazarus. the location is at installed lazarusdir/debugger/fpdebug. You can also obtain it from svn using this link: http://svn.freepascal.org/svn/lazarus/trunk/debugger/fpdebug ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jetchengchu · 2009-12-15 12:32 Thank you for your guidance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theo · 2009-12-15 12:44 Quote from: skalogryyz on December 15, 2009, 01:04:31 pm2nd) http://sourceforge.net/projects/duby Interesting. Is it already usable? Will it be distributed with Lazarus / FPC anytime soon? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-12-15 12:46 It's under development. Some earlier revisions were quite usable (with STABS debug info), but currently it's broken. (apart from coding) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-12-15 13:32 Quote from: Wodzu on December 15, 2009, 02:17:35 pmHow we may help? (apart from coding) cloning or time machines would be helpful testers would be required when the debugger is more or less usable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wodzu · 2009-12-15 16:59 Will it support preview of dynamic arrays content? ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-12-15 18:37 Quote from: Wodzu on December 15, 2009, 05:59:17 pmWill it support preview of dynamic arrays content? ;-) with the proper debug info - yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobo · 2010-04-10 04:53 Any progress on the native pascal debuggers? It would be nice to see all object properties when debugging, and with DGB it does not work.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2010-04-10 11:20 A native debugger won't have full property support either. The dwarf debugger format has no way to describe them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2010-04-10 14:49 if a native debugger is taught to load .ppus as well, it could use the information stored there. I guess this is close to Delphi's debugger. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobo · 2010-04-10 20:55 Maybe the native debugger/Lazarus then needs to use some other debugger format then (like Delphi)? No point in developing a native pascal debugger if all the object properties will not be visible when debugging a program. We have that already with GDB, and it is not sufficient for pascal RAD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2010-04-11 09:08 I was a bit to pessimistic, the dwarf format has way to extend it, so properties can be described. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Graeme · 2010-04-14 08:39 Quote from: Marc on April 10, 2010, 01:20:45 pmA native debugger won't have full property support either. I thought DWARF 3 could be extended to support near anything, without having to have those extensions explicitly contributed to the DWARF standard. Or did I miss understand the DWARF specs? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2010-04-14 14:19 thats what I wrote in my previous reply ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Graeme · 2010-04-15 08:10 @Marc Your reply was on the next forum page so I didn't see it, sorry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kurt · 2010-10-28 14:57 Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm wondering if there has been any movement on this front since April?  One thing I miss from C++ Builder/Delphi (aside from being able to inspect any variable) is the ability to single-step through individual instructions from the assembler window.  Will the native Pascal debugger have this ability? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2010-10-31 15:04 You don't need a native pascal debugger for that. In theory it should be possible now, except that it isn't implemented yet. The disassembler view of lazarus needs to be improved like breakpoint support, single stepping, instructionpointer changes etc. edit: I mean, gdb has support for it, we only need to call it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marcov · 2010-10-31 18:37 Quote from: Kurt on October 28, 2010, 04:57:24 pmSorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm wondering if there has been any movement on this front since April?  One thing I miss from C++ Builder/Delphi (aside from being able to inspect any variable) is the ability to single-step through individual instructions from the assembler window.  Will the native Pascal debugger have this ability? A few weeks ago I looked at Duby's SF project, and it hadn't had commits in 6 months. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Graeme · 2010-12-07 12:10 Quote from: Kurt on October 28, 2010, 04:57:24 pmvariable) is the ability to single-step through individual instructions from the assembler window.  You can already do that with MSEide and GDB. (SVN) The default keyboard assignment is different though: * F7/F8 => normal * Alt F7/F8 => instruction But it can be changed in keyboard settings, so that F7/F8 acts depending on the active window (instruction if disassembler is active, normal otherwise) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Borneq · 2010-12-15 07:21 How install native debuggers instead Gdb? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin_fr · 2010-12-15 11:08 Quote from: Borneq on December 15, 2010, 08:21:55 amHow install native debuggers instead Gdb? Afaik, you can not. Currently only gdb is supported.
