can't debug an event handler

I have a button on my main form and when I click that button I get a
runtime error.  If I put a breakpoint at the start of the button's
event handler I still get the error.  Is there something that happens
between the button click and the event handler and if so how can I 
put a breakpoint there?

Lazarus 0.9.27  and OSX "10.5.8"

can you provide the sample project?
It's hard to say what's wrong.
