Debugging Components In IDE

I new to Lazarus but I've been using Delphi for many years. I'm trying
to convert some of my own components to Lazarus but I'm getting
strange behavour at design time. Is there a way to debug components in
the IDE?

You can open lazarus.lpi project from the lazarus and start it - it
will start you another lazarus under debugger. In the debugged lazarus
you can open your example application and test what you need.
