What do you say about Lazarus' anchor docked layout? lazarus / 11-Options ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2011-06-26 12:01 For me, it looks perfect when you build everything from code, but it sucks when you use the designer because the form being designed would be sent to back whenever you switch to the IDE. An idea from NetBeans would be to have source / design subtab in each editor tab. But this would disallow poDesigned in Position property. What about you guys? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ask · 2011-06-26 13:38 IMO the solution is simply to have designer window to stay on top. Programmer will have to press F12 to switch to the source, if the designer overlaps source editor. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Takeda · 2011-06-26 15:28 Both of Anchordocking and Leledumbo's ideas is good. But unfortunately, when I use anchordocking then I got "copy" and "paste" on pop-up menu (by right clicking) is not working both in Lazarus 0.9..30 (also on fixes edition) and Lazarus 0.9.31. So so sad.. The else, on Form "design" is always hiding when we want to drop an Visual Component above the form when we use anchordocking.. I think, Leledumbo's idea is good (better to added in the current anchordocking). regards, takeda. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Avishai · 2012-08-13 18:07 I know this is an old posting, but I just installed the Anchor Docked IDE. I got it set up the way I wanted and then started trying to work with it.  I'm hoping that this issue has been fixed and I'm just not finding it.  I like having things Docked, but trying to work on a Form I can't see is too high a price to pay.  If there's a solution I would love to hear it, otherwise I'm going back to the UnDocked format. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-08-13 21:54 Try KZDesktop ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Avishai · 2012-08-13 22:27 Thanks Leledumbo, but I don't think you will find any Jews that will use "KZ" anything.  I don't want to get into politics in this Forum so I will leave it at that.  But thanks anyway.  It was nice of you to share. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2012-08-14 06:03 *doh* Its name has nothing to do with politics, religion, whatever. If you see where the author comes from, he probably doesn't even know what KZ means to many people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Avishai · 2012-08-14 06:33 I'm aware of that.  I thinks it's his initials or something totally innocent, but every time I see it, an alarm goes off and then I relax.  It's a reflex. Thanks again for your help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CephasAtheos · 2012-09-29 00:53 Uhm... what is the issue with "KZ"? I'm from Australia, but I have a strong knowledge of, and passion against, modern day racists and bullies and history deniers... So I'm very interested to learn about this thing, if it's OK to ask or discuss... Otherwise, just tell me to *STFU! -Pete *STFU : shut the "flock" up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TurboRascal · 2012-10-01 01:44 Uh... I don't know what "KZ" means in this context too... but it seems as something that would be good to know to be sure not to offend anyone... And, regarding the original topic, I would propose the Form Designer be tied to other windows. For example, whenever I click a component in the Palette (the main window) or something in the Object Inspector, it is about something I want to do on the form. So, I'd propose that the Form Designer be connected to those windows, and whenever one clicks them, the Form Designer is also brought forward. That would be an equivalent of docking, which cannot be done with the Designer, but this might be the next closest thing. Also, as in docking itself, which windows would be connected with the Designer should be configurable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Avishai · 2012-10-01 09:14 I tried to stay out of this, but "KZ" was the abbreviation for Nazi concentration camps.  As in "KZ Dachau" or "KZ  Auschwitz".  I'm sure the author of KZDesktop had no intention to connect that with his docking tool and was almost certainly unaware of this.  But for a Jew, seeing those two letters is not much different than seeing a swastika.  Knowing that there is no connection does not stop the "knee-jerk" response.  Just typing those two letters was uncomfortable. I am not and will not ask the author to change the name, and I encourage anyone that finds it useful to use it.  I only made this post in response to those that asked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CephasAtheos · 2012-10-01 14:05 Thank you, Avishai. I don't think I've ever used those letters together for anything, anyway, but better to be certain! FWIW, I think I understand some of your concern. I learned an enormous amount about that period of history some years ago, and can appreciate your attitude towards anything that acts as a reminder, however small. I can also understand you don't want to make a big thing about it. Thanks for explaining. Kind regards, Pete ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CephasAtheos · 2012-10-01 14:10 Quote from: TurboRascal on October 01, 2012, 03:44:22 am I would propose the Form Designer be tied to other windows. It makes sense to be able to 'link' related windows in certain modes, and it would be helpful to be able to choose what we want 'stuck together'. I'm running Laz on a Mac (my first one ever!) and it's taking some time to figure out where various IDE windows go, especially with a fixed menu at the top, but minimisable windows that take a restart of Lazarus to get back in position sometimes! I'd also like to see the font changeable, but that's already in another thread. So far, the answer to THAT is to look through the source and see if the OS will permit changing windows when they're being created, as the IDE code itself just uses the OS to do all the work, with no attempt at 'hooking in' to configurable options. It could be a good project though! Perhaps we could report that wish on its bugtracker... I suppose its bugs are tracked on Lazarus' mantis as it comes with it? About the letters, I understand when I think about it... Now I remember that I always avoid having anything marked by the single group of two letters "SS" anywhere because I find it disturbing... And I don't even have anything personal with it, but still I wouldn't like a product named SS-something.
