This arror start to show up with Lazarus 1.8 RC2 (I was on Debian , I do not see it before. I do not know what exactly the error mean, I think there is a problem somewhere in the post install script of the package. However, fpc 3.04 is correctly installed and works perfectly. The error does not depend of a previous install of fpc/lazarus as I try both "unclean" and "clean" install. In both case the error popups. Did you try, in a shell: sudo dpkg -i "package.deb" ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Handoko · 2017-12-13 13:02 @Mr.Paul I have no problem installing Lazarus on Ubuntu Mate 17.10 (current latest version). I ever had problem installing Lazarus on older version of Ubuntu, which I solved by using version locking. If I'm not wrong Ubuntu (or maybe Linux) will prevent you to install Lazarus if the FPC version is higher than in its repository. By version locking the FPC and FPC-source, the Lazarus can be installed. I noticed the difference between our experimental environment,  what you did was the second Lazarus on ubuntu mate 17 and what I did was a brand new installation of Lazarus on ubuntu LTS 16.04. You have used "version locking" to solve the installation problem on the old version of Ubuntu, I decided to test immediately. Hope tonight there is good news. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mig-31 · 2017-12-13 15:24 Never hear about version prevention on any Linux. But you can force deb or rpm package installation (yum, rpm, urpmi, apt-get) on any Linux distribution. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Handoko · 2017-12-13 15:51 Quote from: mig-31 on December 13, 2017, 04:24:59 pmBut you can force deb or rpm package installation (yum, rpm, urpmi, apt-get) on any Linux distribution. Yes, you're right. Actually we do not need to force install, to install higher (or lower) version of the same app. But the problem is, it sometimes may refuse to let you to install Lazarus. At least it happened on my tests. Here, the whole story. I tested at least 3 times, the results were same. I cannot remember the full detail because those tests were performed long ago. I used Gdebi instead of sudo dpkg. The installation of FPC and FPC- source were success, although the version I installed was higher than the version recommended in my Ubuntu repository. But when I used Gdebi to install the Lazarus deb package, the "install" button was greyed, I cannot click to continue. I checked using Synaptic Package Manager, both FPC and FPC-source were correctly installed. After some random testings, I found simply version lock both the FPC and FPC-source, the disabled "install" button when installing Lazarus became available. Maybe now, things have been changed. But no harm to test version lock. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Handoko · 2017-12-13 16:12 Quote from: Mr.Paul on December 13, 2017, 10:27:04 amI could not find Lazarus 1.8 in the ubuntu repository, and then I downloaded three debs from the sf.net site, but when installing the first fpc, gdebi prompts the error "fpc conflict with fpc ()" Was the version conflict message you get looks similar to what I got (see picture below)? Did that message appear after the installation of the fpc deb package? If the answer is yes, simply ignore it. The message appears after the installation finished and it really installed correctly. That message is misguiding. I consider it is a bug. It sometimes happens but sometimes does not happen when I installing FPC. Nothing bad ever happened after I ignore that message. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr.Paul · 2017-12-13 17:44 Quote from: Handoko on December 13, 2017, 02:02:08 pmI have no problem installing Lazarus on Ubuntu Mate 17.10 (current latest version). The error occurred in fpc 3.0.4 and did not show up in fpc-src 3.0.4. However, after being ignored, in gdebi, the installation of Lazarus deb reports "failed" and no visible Lazarus icon at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- docno · 2017-12-13 19:24 Installed on my chromebook acer running GALLIUM OS (ubuntu). Is there any Linux distribution where using Lazarus+FPC is not painful experience? Basically concept of most of common distributions how to provide applications is bad. Its kind of selfish. We creators of distribution decide which applications will be packed in our repository. And all other applications distributed in different way will be lot more complicated. Why it can't work simply as on other platforms like Windows or Android? OS have API and applications are made to support that API. Under Linux distributions applications need to support lot more than just API. For example if I use launchpad.net to let my application be built for multiple versions of Ubuntu then I can't simply say to use Lazarus 1.8.0 stable because for each Ubuntu version I can just use apt-get install lazarus-ide and use version which was packed for that particular Ubuntu version. So I need to support older Lazarus version because newer one was not available in lets say Ubuntu 16.04 and newer won't be packed. And because somebody decided to pack Lazarus 1.8.0 RC version for Ubuntu then now I can't compile application for released 1.8.0 because some code is missing like TControl.Scale96ToScreen method. So I would say I will just install Lazarus 1.8.0 stable to my Ubuntu. But there isn't simple one file installation of Lazarus for Ubuntu similar to Windows installer. Because somebody decided to split Lazarus, LCL, FPC and FCL to several DEB packages. Also we can simply install multiple Lazarus instances under Windows simply to separate directories but thats not the way how Linux works. They really want to put files to lots of places in your filesystem so you can't simply install multiple instances. And snaps and flatpack may be way to go but they have also its drawbacks. fpcup and similar "compile it yourself" tools are really not solution. We expect to just install it and use it. So question is: Is there such Linux distributions with modern concepts where it is possible simply to install latests Lazarus release? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr.Paul · 2017-12-15 16:38 Quote from: Chronos on December 14, 2017, 04:10:44 pmfpcup and similar "compile it yourself" tools are really not solution. Dear Chronos, I understand your mood very well. Like you, I expect the Linux desktop software to be easier to install. However, the reality is very skinny, most Linux distributions do not get 'out-of-the-box', so Lazarus wants to do 'out-of-the-box' on Linux, which of course will be one Difficult things, like the tower of the floating sand. Compared to other large software, Lazarus Linux installation has been very simple, only three deb files. I found that only Firefox can do it easier, it can run by unzipping it. In the Lazarus version 1.6.x era, nothing went wrong. This 1.8.0 error in ubuntu1604 has been rapidly updated. I find it hard to help the Lazarus development team, so I'm still willing to be patient. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr.Paul · 2017-12-15 16:45 Quote from: Handoko on December 14, 2017, 12:55:56 pmI managed to install Lazarus 1.8.0 on Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit LTS, read more here: http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,39281.msg269112.ht ml#msg269112 Thanks Handoko, I've seen your successful experiment, that's good news.
