Installing .deb packages on Ubuntu lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- russdirks · 2016-01-22 23:43 I went on to SourceForge to download 1.4.4 onto my Ubuntu 15.10 machine, and it lists 3 packages (lazarus, fpc, and fpc-src) and it says I have to install them all.  I installed lazarus first, and then went to install fpc, but I got the message that a later version was already installed and it wouldn't let me install it??  From the terminal I typed ... Code: Pascal  [Select][+][-]window.onload = function(){var x1 = document.getElementById("main_content_section"); if (x1) { var x = document.getElementsByClassName("geshi");for (var i = 0; i dpkg --get- selections | grep fpc... and it says that I have Code: Pascal  [Select][+][-]window.onload = function(){var x1 = document.getElementById("main_content_section"); if (x1) { var x = document.getElementsByClassName("geshi");for (var i = 0; i fpcfpc-2.6.4fpc-sourcefpc-source-2.6.4 installed!  And of course lazarus is also installed.  So maybe I don't need those other two packages?  Can anybody confirm? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JuhaManninen · 2016-01-23 00:01 I guess you were lucky. Ubuntu 15.10 has FPC 2.6.4 in its repository and it was installed automatically as a dependency. Normally when installing separate packages, you must install FPC first and Lazarus after it. BTW, FPC 3.0 is out and Lazarus 1.6 almost, too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- russdirks · 2016-01-23 03:32 Quote from: JuhaManninen on January 23, 2016, 01:01:03 amNormally when installing separate packages, you must install FPC first and Lazarus after it. Well, that brings up another interesting  issue.  This is actually about the 4th or 5th install I've done lately, trying to set up test machines and diagnose various problems I'm having.  Prior to the incident mentioned above, I had also installed 1.4.4 on a different (virtual) machine running Ubuntu 15.10, and I installed in the order you indicated, fpc first and then lazarus.  Everything went fine but then a bit later Software Updater told me some updates were available, and I noticed there were some "fpc" entries in there, so I went ahead and downloaded.  At the end it said it had encountered some major errors, and recommended I click on a Repair button it offered me, but that failed as well, so I basically have a completely broken Packaging Manager system right now. I went to the terminal and type "sudo apt-get -f install" as was recommended to me at one point, and this is what I got ... Uninstall Lazarus and FPC and use some cleanup options of apt-get or something. Yes, I have also got my XUbuntu system screwed by mixing external packages and packages from the repository. Then the package system tries to be too clever. In your case it got confused because those packages had the same version number. The solution is to use external packages only when they are more recent than the versions in repository. Now it would mean FPC 3.0 and Lazarus 1.6 RC2. Another solution is not to use Ubuntu package system for neither FPC nor Lazarus. You can install FPC from the .tar.gz package provided by FPC project. It has an easy install script. Then get Lazarus from SVN fixes_1_6 or trunk branch (it is just one svn command) and build it. That's actually what I am doing now in my XUbuntu. Easy, recommended. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- russdirks · 2016-01-23 19:34 Quote from: JuhaManninen on January 23, 2016, 11:54:03 amUninstall Lazarus and FPC ... Thanks, that seems to have cleared things up.  I'll continue this installation discussion over on the bug tracker.
