Purpose of file REG.XML

Hello,

after some problems with a not starting Lazarus IDE and / or an error
message when opening the [Tools - Options] menu in my Linux Mint 17.1
- KDE installation, I found a corrupted REG.XML file as reason. What
is the purpose of this file and why I can't find it on my Lazarus /
Win7 installation?
