Error on Startup lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-14 10:17 I am running Linux mint (new instal) and learning Lazarus at the moment. I am a Windows user so am still very much a novice in things Linux (never having found a stable version with nVidia chipsets). I am currently using a device with non-nvidia video set. Preamble over, to the problem. I am having an annoyance as per this thread but cannot seem to find a way to convince linux to let me copy leakview.lpk from my desktop to \usr\ lib\lazarus\1.0.10\components. What am I missing? Fogot: Linux Mint. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2014-07-14 10:22 Welcome to the forum! You're missing: - posting your operating system, lazarus, fpc versions (see first link in my signature) - probably: root permissions to be able to copy into that directory if you are sure that is what you think you should be doing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-14 11:09 Thanks for the quick reply, I hope I get this right, as I am very new to Linux Lazarus 1.0.10 +dfsg1 How do I find the FPC version I corrected my first post to say Linux Mint How can I find the build number? I only downloaded the latest iso from the website on Saturday, so it can't be too old. Your second comment - re: root permissions seems to be correct. If the solution in the  linked post is correct, I need a copy of leakview.lpk in \usr\ lib\lazarus\1.0.10\components. How can I get root access temporarily enough to copy that file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-14 11:18 Found one Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit Cinnamon Version 2.2.13 Linux Kernel 3.13.0.24 generic Found FPC 2.6.2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2014-07-14 11:25 Lazarus build number? You mean svn revision number/subversion revision number? That's not important if you're using stable Lazarus versions... At "getting root access": I'd suggest studying some Linux documentation/guides/howto as it is definitely not Lazarus/programming related but you will need this kind of info to understand what's going on. Try looking up the su or sudo commands.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rails · 2014-07-14 11:57 Quote from: LSemmens on July 14, 2014, 01:09:02 pmThanks for the quick reply, I hope I get this right, as I am very new to Linux Lazarus 1.0.10 +dfsg1 That's not a current version. You will be much better served if you start with a current production version. One of the issues facing Laz Linux users is where to get Laz and FPC from. You essentially have four choices. 1. Your distro's official repositories. 2. Latest production version from the Lazarus official download site. (Links under Downloads to the left) 3. Development version from SVN. 4. Development version via fpcup (BigChimps automated installation script). In order to avoid difficulties later, it is important to chose one of these methods and stick with it -- at least until you have some Linux/Laz experience under your belt. Since the various Linux distros tend to be a bit behind the curve, I suggest you go with option number two. If you do, you need to clean every trace of your old installation off of your system prior to installing the new version. You also need to lock out the Laz and FPC (if you get it elsewhere) packages so that your package manager doesn't attempt to "update" them. The easiest way to do that is using the graphical package manager Synaptic. If it isn't already on your system, I suggest you install it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-14 12:44 Thanks for the responses, will now look for latest Lazarus (I thought I had it) Thanks for the pointer to su and sudo, Was aware of them but not familiar enough with their operation, Off to read up. Back later with some positive (I hope) results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2014-07-14 12:59 Good luck ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-14 15:05 I followed the instructions here for the latest release and got the following error QuoteE: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? I was in terminal and issued the commands verbatim (hence I was logged in as SU) Looking at the menu, it appears that I still have version 1.0.10 . I may be bighting off more than I can chew, here. To give you an idea of what I hope to achieve...eventually. I have dabbled in Linux on and off over the years but have not found the feature set as mature for my needs as Windoze. I have spent years developing some quite complex spreadsheets using VBA that would not port easily to Open Office (these are now redundant, so one obstacle gone) I also have a large (500 pages) word document that relies on macros and VBA which is not a huge issue at the moment so conversion can occur at leisure. My killer apps have been M$ Access (I found the 2Gb limit early in the piece with that one) and (recently) Sketchup. My access files I am hoping to port to MySQL and develop a cross platform solution, hence, my arrival at this point. Sketchup - I have done little research on, but I expect that there will be a suitable CAD package that, with some effort, will perform as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2014-07-14 15:18 Quote from: LSemmens on July 14, 2014, 05:05:05 pmI followed the instructions here for the latest release and got the following error QuoteE: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? I was in terminal and issued the commands verbatim (hence I was logged in as SU) Terminology: using su lets you log in as root (not su). You can check if you see # (root) or $ (normal user) on your console or run whoami. You were probably not really root. Or you were busy with the package manager in another window. PS: calling Windows Windoze.... while complaining about Linux seems a bit... counterproductive ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rails · 2014-07-14 17:30 Personally, I prefer just downloading the debs from sourceforge, then as root install using dpkg. Code: [Select]dpkg -i lazarus_1.2.4-0_amd64.deb http://sourceforge.net/projects/lazarus/files/Lazarus%20Linux%20amd64% 20DEB/Lazarus%201.2.4/ You will also have to download and install the FPC 2-6.4 and FPC 2-6.4 src packages if 2.6.4 isn't already on your system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-15 11:57 @BigChimp: I am not really complaining about either OS just making observations on my prior experience with Linux, the fact that I am again persevering with Linux says that there is value to be had in the OS. It strikes me as a far better alternative to Windows than the other option. I have worked with DOS>Windows for about 30 odd years, I think I've earned the right to call it Windoze. I've also worked with "bits of fruit' (AKA Apple) on and off over the years (I was actually an employee of an Apple Centre at one stage  (selling IBM PCs some; running OS/2 - Had an apple as my desktop computer). I call Systems as I find them, the Fact that I say I've found Linux not as "mature" as the other offering is not a criticism, just an observation. Now... BOT I have downloaded the .deb files from here , which I presume are the latest. Upon installing said files, the Lazarus one complains that the fpc dependency is not satisfied no matter that I've just installed it! How do I get around it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LSemmens · 2014-07-15 12:43 Problem Solved!!! I'd forgotten that AMD64 in a file name refers to the architcture, not the CPU. All installed and working as intended. No to return to learning how to drive FPC and Lazarus. I'm sure that I'll have more questions, probably in the database forum. Thanks for your help.
