Problem installing Lazarus 0.9.30-2 on Ubuntu 11.10 lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-17 23:49 I have a new, unused, up-to-date installation of Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric). I have installed Lazarus 0.9.30-2build1 with the Software Centre. The installation went smoothly. I ran Lazarus. Once it loaded, before I had done anything,  I got the error: QuoteThe current Free Pascal source directory "/usr/share/fpcsrc/$(FPCVER)/" does not look correct. Choose Ok to choose the default "". Otherwise check Environment -> Environment Options -> Files I have read the other posts about problems with Ubuntu 11.10 but this seems to be new. Any ideas? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-18 00:47 If you get this problem then you have installed the 'obvious' choice - Lazarus (0.9.30).  Rookie error! What you actually need is the attractively named 'IDE for Free Pascal SDK metapackage'. (20 mins) This will remove the error message I mentioned in the first post. Lazarus still won't work though.  You will now get this error - http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,15301.0.html which is helpfully shown in the two screenshots. At this point you need this solution (10 mins) - http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,14982.0.html which will remove the error above. At which point you will be able to compile a blank form. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 06:27 Oh shame, seems Ubuntu and Lazarus are not friends at all. Thanks for documenting this tortuous process... (BTW: I switched my Linux dev machines from Ubuntu to Debian... seems like a good move now). Additionally, ludob & I are working on a FPC/Lazarus installer that gets current or stable source code (your choice) from subversion and compiles/installs a separate copy of FPC & Lazarus, that should not mess with a package-based (Synaptic/Software Center/.deb/.rpm/yum/yast/whatever) install. The beauty is that it is designed to do this even without an existing FPC/Lazarus install. It requires binutils/build-essential and subversion clients, though. See the third party announcement section of the forum for download details. You might want to give that a go if you don't yet have ~/lazarus and ~/fpc directories. Of course, it will take another x minutes, but perhaps this method works for you. Note: we've been improving it a lot lately, so the binaries are getting out of date... I'll update them when I have time... Edit: updated binaries (Linux x86, Linux x64, Windows) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-18 12:53 Thanks for the advice. For fellow rookies: After you download fpcup_linux_x86 from here https://bitbucket.org/reiniero/fpcup/downloads you need to make the file executable (right click/Permissions/check box) Also, according to the documentation http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,15919.0.html , I also need subversion, binutils (make etc) and bunzip2. Subversion - synaptic gives just one choice - it needs installing Binutils is already installed. bunzip2 - according to synaptic this is called libio-compress-perl For the benefit of future readers: BigChimp: Would you expect fpcup installation to by-pass the errors above or would they still occur and have to be corrected? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 13:20 Glad it works Prerequisites can be found in the readme. You can view the latest version in the source code repository via: https://bitbucket.org/reiniero/fpcup/overview so... something like Code: [Select]sudo aptitude install build-essential subversion unzip should do it... (or install the packages with those names via synaptic) Regarding bunzip2: you can try first if it is available on your system without installing anything (just run bunzip2 --version). I think it probably is. When the tool is quite stable, I might package it as a .deb that you can download and run. The .deb will ask for installation of those packages, so installing the .deb will also install those packages, no need to do anything. But that's for the future... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 13:26 Quote from: HappyLarry on February 18, 2012, 01:53:47 pmbunzip2 - according to synaptic this is called libio-compress-perl I suspect libio-compress-perl is a perl interface to bunzip2 etc, not bunzip2 itself. I don't think that installing bunzip2 is necessary... At least on my Debian system, I seem to have a packaged called bzip2 but that is probably installed by default... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-18 13:58 Errr ... it didn't actually work right. Nothing works first time with Lazarus on Ubuntu. Ever. It's the rule. Your program created folders fpc, fpcbootstrap,  lazarus + some other files in my Home directory. When if I try ./lazarus (is this right?) in a terminal then lazarus 0.9.31 appears as I would expect. If I try to compile a 'blank form' project I get a million hints and one fatal error: /home/xxx/lazarus/lcl/interfaces/gtk2/gtk2winapi.inc(3403,73) Error: Identifier not found "pango_font_family_is_monospace" However, I think the paths in Tools/Options may also be wrong. I think it is using the paths from my 0.9.30 installation (which still seems to work). What should the paths be for -lazarus directory, -fpc compiler path and -fpc source directory  in your installation? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 14:17 Ok. FYI, are you running 64 bit? I assume you know about the bugs in the bugtracker about running Lazarus on Ubuntu? The way to start the new lazarus is by running ~/Lazarus_trunk (i.e. the Lazarus_trunk script in your home directory). Just running ~/lazarus/lazarus WILL start lazarus, but use the standard configuration directory for Lazarus (whichever it is, don't know)=>you'll get the settings you had for your package install... and yes, those are wrong. Running ~/Lazarus_trunk starts up Lazarus with a nice separate --primary-config-path, where fpcup should have set up the right settings for ~/fpc etc. Getting back with settings later.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-18 14:18 Going back to the original 0.9.30 installation from the Ubuntu repository. When I try to add a simple  'Click' event for a button I get the error shown in this post. http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,15005.0.html. Has anyone solved this? It is not solved in the thread. Has anyone got Lazarus working on Ubuntu 11.10? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 14:25 Quote from: HappyLarry on February 18, 2012, 02:58:22 pmErrr ... it didn't actually work right. Updated readme (see fpcup site) to include instructions that you need to start ~/Lazarus_trunk, not ~/Lazarus/startlazarus or ~/Lazarus/lazarus. Thanks for the feedback, let me know if you need more information/help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-18 14:44 @BigChimp (a) 32 bit (b) No, I am not aware of these bugs - I find it much more fun to find them all for myself.  (c) None of these run: ./Lazarus_trunk /Lazarus_trunk Lazarus_trunk sh Lazarus_trunk nor do they run from the lazarus directory. I searched for Lazarus_trunk in my Home directory and it is not there. Oh Well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BigChimp · 2012-02-18 15:13 Sorry it doesn't work. FYI: fpcup should generate an fpcup.log which will tell you if there were any errors. If there were, it will have reference to the output of the commands it ran (that output will be somewhere in the /tmp directory, which get erased every reboot, so your file system won't get littered with old log stuff). If you'd like to, you could post the logs, which might help me in figuring out what's going on... Sorry to say, on Linux, there might be an error in fpcup that stops it from building the bigide (IDE with all packages). To temporarily work around that issue, you could try running Code: [Select]fpcup --skip=bigide,doceditor,lhelp,lazdatadesktopThis will at least allow you to run the IDE, but recompiling the IDE with all packages probably won't work. Actually, you might just want to abandon this entirely for now. I might fire up an Ubuntu test VM to see what's going on, but no promises on when (or if...) I could just download Ubuntu 11.10 x86, right? ....Edit: I'm downloading as we speak. I'm going to investigate getting only Lazarus built with fpcup on Ubuntu, and not let fpcup do anything with fpc... By now you must surely be thinking why use Lazarus and Ubuntu - perhaps somebody else has actual experience with Ubuntu and can chime in. Good luck, BigChimp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HappyLarry · 2012-02-19 13:42 @BigChimp - thanks for the suggestions and good luck. In general : Does Lazarus work in Ubuntu 11.10? Has anyone got it going? When I try to add a simple  'Click' event for a button I get the error shown in the screenshot of the  first post of http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,15005.0.html. Has anyone solved this?
