very slow linking

Linking my very small program (the resulting executable is 1.2 Mb)
takes 10 minutes or more. The hard disk is very busy.
Lazarus runs on Debian in Virtualbox under Windows. I use Lazarus
version 0.9.28.2-12. Fpc is version 2.4.0. I can't upgrade Lazarus
because of 'install from source' problems.

B.T.W. what is the Linux distro with the least problems regarding
Lazarus?

That may mean you need more memory in your virtual machine.

Good idea! I've tweaked a bit with the memorysettings of Virtualbox
and the linking speed is normal again. I didn't know memory has such a
impact on linking speed.
