can't call resource compiler?

I want to install lazarus from source on Debian under Virtualbox.
I'am using fpc 2.4.4
I get error: Can't call the resource compiler "/usr/bin/fpcres",
switching to external mode
This doesn't make sense because I can call fpcres from the prompt.
I've searched in the archives and I found that maybe I should raise
the ulimit(??)
What can I do?

I didn't have this problem with Mageia Linux 1 inside Virtual Box, so
if nothing works you could try changing your distribution.

I give up on rebuilding Lazarus from source. I'll install the binary's
and wait for someone who fixes the problems in Virtualbox or Lazarus.

I sincerely doubt the problem could be in Virtualbox... have used it
for years without issues (ok many issues, but mainly caused by
PEBKAC/PICNIC, not the fault of VirtualBox)...
