startlazarus --> Runtime error 203 lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulW · 2011-10-06 18:37 LinuxMint (debian): 3.0.0-1-amd64 (wheezy/sid) Asus i5 Notebook w/ 8gb RAM I just installed FPC and Lazarus by downloading via the Synaptic Package Manager.  I got no errors during the installation.  Here's what I ended up with: fpc               2.4.0-2 fpc-source        2.4.0-2 fp-utils          2.4.0-2  fp-units-misc     2.4.0-2 lazarus           0.9.28.2-12 lazarus-doc       0.9.28.2-12 lazarus-ide       0.9.28.2-12 lazarus-ide-gtk2  0.9.28.2-12 lazarus-src       0.9.28.2-12 lcl               0.9.28.2-12 lcl-gtk2          0.9.28.2-12 lcl-units         0.9.28.2-12 lcl-utils         0.9.28.2-12 When I start Lazarus from the menu (startlazarus %f), sometimes I get a brief display of the Lazarus splash screen, usually not.  Then nothing happens - at least that I can see. I also tried to start Lazarus from a shell as root and sent the output to a file to examine: Runtime error 203 at $0000000000736A16   $0000000000736A16   $0000000000720991 [WARNING] Out of OEM specific VK codes, changing to unassigned [WARNING] Out of unassigned VK codes, assigning $FF TLazarusManager.Run starting /usr/lib/lazarus/0.9.28.2/lazarus ... I have no idea what's going on.  Ran memtest86+ and found no errors.  I searched for "Runtime error 203" in this forum and found one post which didn't provide a definitive solution.  Any help will be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2011-10-07 13:42 Can you start /usr/lib/lazarus/0.9.28.2/lazarus ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulW · 2011-10-07 17:23 Thanks, Vincent for your response. When I executed /usr/lib/lazarus/0.9.28.2/lazarus in root shell, I got... I have a VirtualBox with Linux-Mint (2.6.39-2-amd64) running.  I was able to install Lazarus and it started without complaint. I then upgraded the VirtualBox to Linux-Mint (3.0.0-1-amd64).  After rebooting, Lazarus ran just fine. So, I wonder what might be different about the VB Linux-Mint environment compared to the "real" Linux-Mint installation on the notebook computer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 99Percent · 2012-03-19 18:17 I am getting runtime error 203 in Linux Mint LMDE x64 running under VirtualBox with FPC 2.4.4 and Lazarus with either 0.90.2 or 0.90.4 How can I debug this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jacques Bernardes · 2012-03-21 02:16 Same problem here. Won't run for me, either. I get either a runtime error 203 or a runtime error 216. I did a bit of testing with some virtual machines (VirtualBox OSE). My main system is LMDE 64-bit running on an AMD Phenom X4 based desktop. That gives the runtime error 203, and I've tried running Lazarus 0.9.28.2, 0.9.30.2 and also the latest version from svn. With the svn code, both FreePascal and Lazarus built OK, and the old Borland-style FreePascal IDE will run OK, but no way with Lazarus - I don't even get as far as the splash screen. So, as above, I set up a few virtual machines and tried some different distros. Results are :- 1) Linux Mint 12, Ubuntu version. Lazarus works just fine. 2) Plain Debian testing, Lazarus works just fine. 3) LMDE 12, both testing and unstable, Lazarus crashes with either a runtime 203 or a runtime 216. I have tried Lazarus as downloaded from the repositories, the .DEBs available on Sourceforge, and downloading sources via svn and building my own. None of them will work. 4) LMDE 12, but I tried a 32-bit version. Same results as 3). In all cases above, all I did was to install the OS in a brand new machine, make sure that /etc/apt/sources.list was pointing at the correct repositories, do successively an update, upgrade and dist- upgrade, and then install Lazarus. You would tend to think that this was a problem for Lazarus, were it not for the fact that standard Debian testing runs :Lazarus without any problems - and that's the case both in a virtual machine and on my main system, as I ran Debian wheezy (it was then testing, if it isn't now) before I installed LMDE. I've posted on the Lazarus mailing list about this too, and followed the suggestions there (which more or less boiled down to "build it from svn"), nothing works. At the moment I'm having to do any Lazarus work in a VM loaded with Debian, that's just a minor annoyance but if there's no (apparent) prospect of getting LMDE and Lazarus to talk to one another, then I might just as well go back to plain old Debian. I've seen quite a few other reports of this problem, and a few "works for me" replies, but most of those "works for me" folks are running on an Intel CPU or running the Ubuntu-based version. It does seem that this problem might be specific to LMDE running on an AMD 64 CPU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ludob · 2012-03-30 08:34 Quote from: brian666 on March 30, 2012, 10:04:56 amI've seen quite a few other reports of this problem, and a few "works for me" replies, but most of those "works for me" folks are running on an Intel CPU or running the Ubuntu-based version. It does seem that this problem might be specific to LMDE running on an AMD 64 CPU. I'm one these "works for me" folks. As the original reporter LMDE 12 running in Virtualbox 4.0.6 on an AMD 64, image downloaded from the site he indicated. Lazarus from mint repository works without any problems. A while ago I updated the mantis issue http://bugs.freepascal.org/view.php?id=21515 with some comments on the repositories used but got no return from the original reporter. Since you can reproduce the error you can perhaps reply to the following questions: - when following the installation procedure I got a problem with apt- get upgrade. Tried to solve this with Update Manager. It gave me a warning that the security and multimedia repositories where the original ones and should be changed to the debian.linuxmint.com/latest/ ones, which I did. The thing is that these repositories seem relatively outdated (aug 2011) for something called "latest" and "test". Debian testing is more recent than that. What repositories are you using? What version is your libgtk2.0-0? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulW · 2012-03-31 13:41 As original poster, I've been following these messages with interest. Regarding the AMD issue, My Asus notebook has Intel i5-2410M CPU @ 2.3GHz8.0 GB RAM64-bit OS (Windows 7 and LinuxMint 3.0.0-1-amd64)As stated earlier, Lazarus runs OK in a Virtual Box (LinuxMint 3.0.0-1-amd64) Also, I installed openSUSE in another pattition and Lazarus ran just fine!
