Directory Structure for Full Make

I am trying a from scratch install on the TinyCore/Microcore linux
distro. I have the FPC.rpm, fpcsource.rpm, and the lazarus.rpm (from
snapshot) extracted into their own directories like this:

/home/fpc  (fpc.rpm)
/home/fpc/fpcsource  (fpcsource.rpm)

and

/home/lazarus  (lazarus.rpm)

Is this the directory structure I need before the make process? Is
there a better directory structure? Does it matter even?
