One big package lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LazaruX · 2010-08-11 20:59 I know that Linux works with dependencies, while on Windows each application is provided with all the necessary files. I know that the windows way produces a lot of duplicated files,.... My question is: Is it possible to create one big huge package (tar.gz,  or whatever format), where all the files needed to Lazarus are contained in one folder (with its subfolders...)? I know that if something like this would be possible it would be needed for each distribution, but still, is it possible? Something like: LazarusIDE |-FreePascal |--Subdolders with dependencies of FP |-Lazarus |-GTK |--libGTKdev... |-QT | I hope my question is clear.... What I mean is a bit like GoboLinux does, ...the Windows way without dependencies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jegas · 2010-08-31 20:03 I'm with you on this one! Today I have spent hours trying to install Lazarus. The Wiki how-to links are mostly broken, I had to go outside of freepascal.org and sourceforge to get certain files... I downloaded everything I could find in the Wiki and then I grab the trunk and it turns out the FPC version needed is higher than the instructions I was following... hence all downloads and etc.. had to start over kind of. Ok - Install FPC 2.4.0 from a Tar on linux! Ok - should be piece of cake - has been in the past! NOPE! missing libtinfo.so.5 - What is that? Something from NCurses.. Downloaded NCurses 5.7, installed - followed directions to make sure I did it correctly so it generates this (often not created) shared library.. followed all instructions.. ./configure --with-libtool --with-termlib and some other recommended options in the INSTALL file for ncurses 5.7... no dice - system wide hunt - nothing.. maybe 5.7 doesn't work this way? I dunno - but no mention of it (that I found) in the wiki. So - I'm stuck with not being able to install fpc 2.4.0 on centOs, unable to get Lazarus installed - and trust I'm a fan boy of these projects and I'm perplexed at how tough this is to do. I'd be more than happy with a yum install that gathered all dependancies like most other software I install on linux does... yum install some-program-name-here I want to code - not fight this stuff. I know this is all volunteer mostly - but I mean FPC 2.2.x installed without a hitch on linux. ugh... --Jason ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jegas · 2010-08-31 23:34 I hate to double post but I think it's warranted: I was able to finally get Lazarus running... Though I still would like to see a big bundle with everything in it! I'm heading off to the Wiki to do an Update - at least for CentOS 32bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- piita · 2010-09-14 19:43 I totally agree. I'm a newbie at linux and installing lazarus and fpc is a pain. installing the lazarus 09.28.2 deb and fpc deb from the sourceforge page results in dependencies missing or incompatible. I'm running linux mint and its package manager has an old version of lazarus. Simple install but the Tradiogroup has a nasty bug which adds empty items to it and that makes it unusable. I looked at "the way I setup lazarus and fpc" thread but that only made me say  "huh?" If it's not too much trouble, a single package would be very appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mas steindorff · 2010-09-14 22:19 perhaps a related topic of interest...
