Lazarus IDE stopped working lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbowles · 2009-12-14 14:35 Hello all, I searched the forum and did not find a solution.  I apologize if I just missed it. Anyway, I have had Lazarus up and running and wrote/compiled several freepascal programs with it.  Yesterday, I tried to run Lazarus and got the splash screen only, for just a couple seconds, then the splash screen went away and I have no indication that the IDE is running.  I don't see anything obvious in the System Monitor. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both the IDE and FPC compiler, with identical results. I don't use Lazarus daily, or even weekly, so I'm not exactly sure when it stopped working.  I suspect my recent upgrade from jaunty to karmic had something to do with it. Finally, I'm not much of an expert in Linux.  I've only recently switched from the world of Windows, so I don't yet know very well how to find where things are on the file system. If it is helpful, I can post a screen shot of the splash screen, or answer any questions about my system configuration.  You might need to be very explicit in telling me where to look for the answers to your questions, though. Thanks, Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2009-12-14 16:52 first what would help is to tell us: - what lazarus version you installed - where you got this version - how you installed - what previos version you had - if you are running 32 or 64 bit lazarus etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbowles · 2009-12-14 20:27 Yes, I suppose I should have included at least some version information! Currently have Lazarus 0.9.26.2-2 installed, which I got through the Synaptic package manager.  I don't know how to tell you where Synaptic got Lazarus. I installed it via the Synaptic standard method: right-click the application I want in the list, choose "Mark for Installation" then click the "Apply" button.  Several other packages were automatically installed, including lazarus-ide, lazarus-src, lazarus-doc, all the same 0.9.26.2-2 version.  Also fpc, fpc-utils, and fpc-source, all version 2.2.4-3. I don't know for sure what previous version of Lazarus I had installed.  I installed it as described above in late August, if that helps. If there is a log file I can read which would contain better information, just tell me where to look. Thanks, Jeff I'm running the 32bit version of Lazarus, on 32bit Ubuntu (karmic). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2009-12-14 23:45 I don't use synaptic, but I assume an installation with it should at least work. Can you start lazarus from a command prompt (terminal) and see what messges are printed there ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbowles · 2009-12-15 00:48 OK - here's the terminal output from starting Lazarus from the command line: jeff@ubuntu:~/.lazarus/bin$ startlazarus [WARNING] Out of OEM specific VK codes, changing to unassigned [WARNING] Out of unassigned VK codes, assigning $FF TLazarusManager.Run starting /home/jeff/.lazarus/bin/lazarus ... /home/jeff/.lazarus/bin/lazarus: error while loading shared libraries: libglib-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory jeff@ubuntu:~/.lazarus/bin$ It looks like I'm missing libglib-1.2.so.0 - is this part of some package I can apt-get or otherwise easily replace? Thanks, Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbowles · 2009-12-16 18:06 Can anyone tell me:   a) How to install the older libglib-1.2.so for my Lazarus IDE to be happy           or, preferably   b) How to configure my Lazarus IDE to use libglib-2.0.so, which is what I currently have Thanks! Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zoran · 2009-12-16 19:00 I managed to install Lazarus on Ubuntu 9.10 this way: http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Getting_Lazarus#Short_version:_get_ Lazarus On that page I followed instructions named "Short version: get Lazarus" and it worked. I don't know if that can solve your problem, but perhaps you could try to uninstall what you got with Synaptic package manager and use that procedure. I am quite new to Linux, I installed Ubuntu just to try Lazarus there, to see if my programs can be compiled in Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jbowles · 2009-12-17 01:31 From one newbie to another, thanks Zoran! I was able to get Lazarus installed, and wrote and compiled a quick "hello world".
