Binutils for crosscompiling to ARM

I'm trying to compile fpc (v2.5.1 from svn) for ARM by "make all
CPU_TARGET=arm" which runs fine until ld and as are called. Where can
I find arm-linux-ld|as?

No way to avoid self compiling 
First, I downloaded binutils-source with Synaptic (/usr/src/),
decompressed and followed the (german) instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GNU_ARM-Toolchain. Some patches were
neccessary for tc-arm.c, google helps.
Now I have arm-elf-ld|-as that I softlinked to arm-linux-ld|-as. Make
fpc with cpu_target runs well but "make install" produces an error:

The compiler ppcarm was moved correctly to /usr/local/lib/fpc/2.5.1
but cannot be executed: ldd says "not a dynamic executable". The file
/usr/local/bin/fpc has been overridden and can't be executed as well.
All following makes fail on

(expecting ")")Fortunately, by deleting and creating a softlink to
ppcx64 I can continue programming 
What did I wrong? Should I better try to install fpc on the arm-
machine? It's a Sheevaplug with following specs:
