Demo Virtual Machines lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- egrobler · 2009-09-22 09:52 Hi Lazarus community, There are many windows idiots like me that are unfamiliar with Linux. I think it would help the Lazarus cause if Virtual Machines (VMWare) are available for download with FreePascal pre-installed and working. If this has already been done I apologize! Regards Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- skalogryz · 2009-09-22 09:59 I've a Virtual Box image with pre-installed Ubuntu 9.04-x86 and Lazarus/FreePascal configured, but the image is quite large (about 4Gb). both Lazarus (0.9.29) and FreePascal (2.5.1) are svn trunk versions How can i share it? On the other hand, maybe it's more interesting to use a LiveCD with FreePascal/Lazarus installed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- egrobler · 2009-09-22 10:23 Quote from: skalogryyz on September 22, 2009, 11:59:49 amLazarus/FreePascal configured, but the image is quite large (about 4Gb). Yes, a working machine will be very big, but a clean install where you set all unused space to zeros and then zip it can be manageable. My WinXP-64 template is for example 800MB and I assume linux will be much smaller than windows! Regards Eric On VMware website you should easily find some machine with openSUSE preinstalled (current version is 11.1). This distribution doesn't have Lazarus preinstalled of course but here is what you need to do: 1. Start your virtual machine 2. Login to system (most likely there will be either some demo user or only root login, for that refer to any document provided with machine) 3. Open any web browser and point to http://software.opensuse.org/search 4. Now search for lazarus and choose 1-Click Install. After that just follow the instructions there For instance you can try this one machine: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1395. However you should have no troubles with finding others ---------------------------------------------------------------------- egrobler · 2009-09-22 13:12 any web browser and point to http://software.opensuse.org/search 4. Regards Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- alter · 2009-09-22 14:08 The IDE is the same. openSUSE handles packages of different format than Ubuntu which means that http://software.opensuse.org/search won't work. No idea what is the easiest way to install Lazarus with Ubuntu (I don't use it). Eventually you can try to download proper deb packages from http://sourceforge.net/projects/lazarus/files/ and install them as root. Install command is in case of Ubuntu dpkg -i ---------------------------------------------------------------------- egrobler · 2009-09-22 14:13 Quote from: alter on September 22, 2009, 04:08:35 pmThe IDE is the same. openSUSE handles packages of different format than Ubuntu which means that http://software.opensuse.org/search won't work. You may have to configure it a bit (add the IP of your VM to a file called X0.hosts in the XMing directory) Then in your VM start Lazarus or other apps with DISPLAY=x.x.x.x:0 lazarus and all windows appear on your windows desktop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- egrobler · 2009-09-22 20:10 Quote from: Martin_fr on September 22, 2009, 10:05:45 pmAnother nice thing you can do: Get XMing (a free x-server for windows).
