why does lazarus produce an additional  Form1 and use that in the
project instead of the Form1 that I just spent hours creating?

or, more importantly, how can i get lazarus to stop doing that?

I'm using the linux version on PCLinuxOS

I've never seen that. Steps to reproduce?

Edit: Is it the same problem you reported in 2005?

I seem to have solved it (and some other problems) by running
chmod 777 on /usr/lib/lazarus/
