Dependency is not satisfiable when installing Lazarus on Ubuntu lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ehj666 · 2009-03-31 00:22 Hi all, This must be something simple, as I see there are others having no problem installing Lazarus to Ubuntu Hardy (8.04). I am getting "dependency is not satisfiable: libxi6" when trying to install the package "lazarus-ide". FPC installed fine, where I tried both the version linked to from the free pascal site, and the version on souceforge associated with Lazarus. The versions I am installing or trying to install are: FPC: 2.2.2-8 Lazarus: 0.9.26.2-0 Synaptic shows that libxi6 is installed, version is 2:1.1.3-1.  The control file for the lazarus-ide package specifies: Depends: ... libxi6 (>= 2:1.1.3-1ubuntu3) ... I am not sure if the "ubuntu3" portion matters, but I did not find a package by the longer name when searching packages on ubuntu.com. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ellen · 2009-03-31 08:07 I had the same problem but here it was solved after i clicked the update-manager Ellen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ehj666 · 2009-03-31 12:48 No such luck here. Everything is updated to the latest version. I even went to the Ubuntu repositiories and downloaded the latest version of libxi6, but it simply said the same version is already installed. I also tried on another computer with a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 and get the same error. So whatever I am doing, I am at least consistent about it. Regards, Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ehj666 · 2009-03-31 23:54 Ok, looks like I got Lazarus installed. Here is what I had to do. 1> Install FPC from the sourceforge packages associates with Lazarus (2.2.2-8). 2> Install lazarus-ide as follows: sudo dpkg -i --force-depends lazarus-ide_0.9.26.2-0_i386.deb This gives the following warning: dpkg: lazarus-ide: dependency problems, but configuring anyway as you request:  lazarus-ide depends on libxi6 (>= 2:1.1.3-1ubuntu3); however:   Version of libxi6 on system is 2:1.1.3-1. This allowed Lazarus to install and from a quick test appears to be running properly. This is my first attempt at using fpc and Lazarus and thus subject to newbie type misunderstandings, but ISTM the depends reference in the control file associated with the lazarus-ide package should reference libxi6 >= 2:1.1.3-1 rather than 2:1.1.3-1ubuntu3. However since I do not see anyone else reporting this problem I am inclined to believe it has to do with my install of Ubuntu. Any insight would be appreciated. Regards, Eric ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ñuño_Martínez · 2009-04-01 15:22 I have the same problem in my home computer (Xubuntu 8.04) but my job computer updates with no problems (Kubuntu 8.10). Don't know why.  [edit] May be libxi6 wasn't updated in 8.04 LTS due to stability problems? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aime2nice · 2009-04-16 16:30 Hello, I have the same problem. I try to change the package to change the line "depends", but I can not. If someone has solved the problem, it can post the solution. Make a "force-depends" does not solve anything because, at each install package does away with Lazarus. Thank you in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- herux · 2009-04-23 10:25 i have the same problem. but i am using older version of lazarus-ide. and it's done at least ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aime2nice · 2009-04-28 13:12 Helo, I upgrade my Ubuntu in the last version (9.04) and all is good, now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- princeriley · 2009-05-14 14:25 Perhaps this call for help will get more ears than others have so far on this issue. I've spent several fruitless hours struggling with a lazarus and fpc install on Ubuntu Hardy. The issue with the lib file is not, by itself the big issue here, but the ongoing and persistent lack of a straight-forward, reliable installation process for Free Pascal. I have to wonder why a project of this type and maturity still has such a convoluted, error-prone and buggy install process even on a mature and stable distro like Ubuntu (hardy heron). I'm far from being a newbie and after plumbing the depths of the Lazarus IDE and FPC install .DEBs its very difficult to understand why 'someone' hasn't taken this more in hand and fixed this .. isn't it time for the Ubuntu and Debian maintainers of the packages to:                  1) create a unified and clean install package for source, libs, and executables                  2) maintain and audit the subsequent releases so the install package stays fixed I won't ask for help on my specific problems here since I think the broader issue of builing a solid relieable install package will benefit everyone both immediately and in the long run. After spending almost five hours attempting to install the Lazarus ide on Ubuntu Hardy Heron I've discovered that the souce of all this trouble is a fight between the debian maintainer of the FPC debs and the Ubuntu folks who have not sync'd the libraries and package names.. After reading this console log and looking thru literally hundreds of pages and web notes I come to find out that none of the posted instructions to put the lazarus ide on a Ubuntu system (Hardy) will work correctly .. it doesnt matter how you try or malform the apt-get, its broken fundamentally at the core and unless someone at Ubuntu or Debian get their libs names syncd back up this will remain a problem. The fpc users are caught in the middle here and forgive me for being so blunt, but its neither fair nor professional for the Debian manintainer to fail to notice all the posts that keep popping up on this problem without resolving this and keeping it fixed ..... As an illustration I've included just a few lines from literally hundreds of console messges taken from my attempt to install Lazarus and FPC ... However, Lazarus installs seamlessly if you stick with the version available in the standard Ubuntu repositories (0.9.26). The problem is, those packages are not up-to- date. This is surprising as 8.04 is the current LTS Ubuntu release. On Ubuntu 8.04.2 I installed a development snapshot .deb set (Laz 0.9.27 + FPC 2.3.1) from Donald Shimoda's testing repository (info at http://donaldshimoda.blogspot.com). You only need to get three .debs: lazarus, fpc, and fpc-src. Ignore the invalid gpg key. Uninstall any lazarus*.deb and fpc-*.deb/fp-*.deb packages first.
