Lazarus on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SlackBrane · 2009-02-12 01:00 Warning!!! Clueless/Novice/Idiot/ at work... If you do have experience then you might want to read this and ignore me, whilst pointing out my mistakes to those who know less. Otherwise, for others, it 'might' break Ubuntu.... but I think you might be able to recover things as long as you stick within the Synaptic Package Manager. I am guessing but the 'best' bet is to keep within the tools provided by Ubuntu to manage the things that you put on your computer rather than going 'free-form' and smearing stuff about the place..... So, and it seems to work (for me) but I have nothing worth losing so 'what the hey?' Others might be more wary but... if you stick within the package manager then things 'might' be OK. I went and 'installed' the snapshots.. You can find a list of places to get them from here... http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Lazarus_Snapshots_Downloads I used... http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/ you might pick another.... Before you go there go to System|Administration|Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu.. You will have to enter your password to gain Administrative Rights. With 'All' selected search for 'laz'. Assuming you have used the Package Manager to 'install' Lazarus then its bits will have coloured in boxes next to them. I get -ide -src and -doc. CTRL-Left Click on each one in turn to select all of them then Right Click on one of the selected ones and pick 'Mark for Complete Removal' Now click on the Big Green Apply Tick on the Tool Bar.. Then Click on the Big Green Apply Tick button on the dialog box that comes up. This should not cause too much worry/panic because although you are throwing the things away Ubuntu/Synaptic PM still has the information in its database and you can use it to put them back in again.... Next you 'want' to kill off the FPC/Free Pascal Compiler that ended up being installed. This time do a search for 'fp'... There are lots of them. Look under the Description column and Do the same with those that start with 'Free Pascal', select them with CTRL- Left Click on each one, Right Click on one of the selected ones, select Complete Removal, Apply and Apply. Again Ubuntu/Synaptic PM 'knows' about them so if it goes wrong you can still get them back. I'm sort of worried about dependencies here but when I did it the system did not complain so I'd guess there was nothing else about that relied on things to do with Free Pascal. That might mean I am lucky because I've not really used it to create..... anyway.... I got rid of them because one of the subsequent steps tried to 'fiddle' with fp-units-gfx and was told to 'get lost'. Now, hopefully, you have a 'clean' but still working thing for the next part. Just in case I'll undo what I did and try it again. I was naughty and did it as root but I 'should' be able to do it as a normal luser and use sudo... We shall see. Having done it the directories have gone and the Synaptic PM does not 'know' about them. That sounds right because a complete uninstall should have been complete and Lazarus/Free Pascal, the versions I installed are not 'known' to the PM in terms of primary or secondary support. Like I say [and I'm sort of sure someone else has worked to make it this way] that's the reason why you want to use the 'recommended/provided' tools. Now we get to go off to the place where the snapshots live. As an aside this may well work with previous stable versions under Ubuntu. In my case that's... Well, one of these from the Wiki Page above, because they are listed as 'All'.. http://www.hu.freepascal.org/lazarus/ http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/ http://michael-ep3.physik.uni-halle.de/Lazarus/ Thanks to the people who maintain those mirrors, apologies if I have been 'hammering' on them. One more time. Down at the bottom of... http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/ You will find the Linux ones. Just in case, naturally, in Ubuntu I'm using Firefox. I've created a folder in my home directory on Ubuntu called 'Downloads' and I've told Firefox to stick stuff I download into that folder. You might have somewhere else but you will have to find it later. So, I download these three... [I ignored the fpc srpm one, the Lazarus one says I need fpc and fpc-src] http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/downloads/fpc-2.2.3- ***.rpm http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/downloads/fpc- src-2.2.3-***.rpm http://snapshots.lazarus.shikami.org/lazarus/downloads/lazarus- .9.27.18635-***.rpm Links won't work but hopefully you get the idea. I'll just do those now.... tum tee tum tee tum. Well I suppose that whilst that is happening I can type some more words. These are RPM files which are something to do with RedHat Package Management, I think? Ubuntu, if you have installed it, comes with something called 'Alien'. I don't think it is installed by default so.. you can use Synaptic PM [SPM] to put it in. Stick 'alien' in the search box in SPM and it will be there with an Ubuntu Icon next to it [It's supported]. If it hasn't been installed then right click on it, mark it for installation and, Apply, Apply. Alien converts .rpm files to .deb files and Ubuntu/SPM uses .deb files to maintain the things you install on your computer. Apart from caveats this one worked for me but now.... you have to go into Terminal mode. Applications|Accessories|Terminal If you did not have a fiddle with where Firefox downloads your stuff to then chances are you downloaded the previous files to your Desktop. Since I did have a fiddle it downloaded them to my Downloads folder. So I get to type.. cd Downloads Followed by [I said I was not an expert] ls -al For a quick check to see that the files are there. -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 24804411 2009-02-11 23:25 fpc-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 17708322 2009-02-11 23:25 fpc- src-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 63315846 2009-02-11 23:27 lazarus-0.9.27.18635-20090211.i386.rpm They are but things look bad on the permissions front and I'll just lose some cred points by trying what I read elsewhere..... http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/23/installing-using-an-rpm-file/ So, like this is not happening as I write this... I'll try sudo alien -k fpc-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm Ubuntu asks me for me 'sudo' password and.... Wowser, off it goes. Fingers crossed for later. The conversion takes some time. I do get an... Warning: Skipping conversion of scripts in package fpc: postinst Warning: Use the --scripts parameter to include the scripts. but I'll go fingers crossed because I get... fpc_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb generated. At the end and.... the SPM 'knows' about .deb files. If I do an alien -h Then I get the help things that say I could have included the scripts by doing.. sudo alien -k -c fpc-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm Which, having a bit of a worry, I did before but I'll see how this goes. Next up is sudo alien -k fpc-src-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm Followed by sudo alien -k lazarus-0.9.27.18635-20090211.i386.rpm Wait for a while and ls -al gives me... -rw-r--r--  1 root  root  24789722 2009-02-11 23:56 fpc_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 24804411 2009-02-11 23:25 fpc-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm -rw-r--r--  1 root  root  17509116 2009-02-12 00:02 fpc- src_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 17708322 2009-02-11 23:25 fpc- src-2.2.3-20090211.i386.rpm -rw-r--r--  1 root  root  63018724 2009-02-12 00:12 lazarus_0.9.27.18635-20090211_i386.deb -rw-r--r--  1 keith keith 63315846 2009-02-11 23:27 lazarus-0.9.27.18635-20090211.i386.rpm Now I have my .deb files and it's time to shunt them into Ubuntu.. Like it says on the WordPress Article... just in case you have to scroll back, http://ubuntu.wordpress.com/2005/09/23/installing-using-an-rpm-file/ sudo dpkg -i name of Like this... keith@keith-desktop:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i fpc_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb dpkg: status database area is locked by another process keith@keith-desktop:~/Downloads$ Whoops... I had the Synaptic Package Manager running when I tried that. I'll switch it off and try again. keith@keith-desktop:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i fpc_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb dpkg: status database area is locked by another process Try Again.. keith@keith-desktop:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i fpc_2.2.3-20090211_i386.deb Selecting previously deselected package fpc. Processing triggers for man-db ... keith@keith-desktop:~/Downloads$ This one gets a bit of a hard disk rumble which might have been the Processing Triggers. Mind you, like I say, I don't really know. So..... Being Mr Dangerous.......... I'm going to click on 'Applications' and see if I now have a 'Programming' section in there.... Drum Roll!!!!! I DO!!!!!! Move the mouse pointer up to it and...... YES!!!!! Lazarus is there!!!! Let's click on it... This is where it goes slightly wrong/right and I might be dealing with leftovers. I should have got the 'standard' something like 'Source Directory Does not Look Right, Try this one Instead' which is what happened when I first tried this. I accepted the offer and of it went and started working. This time it just worked.... apart from the 'other one'. What you might/should get is a 'Choose OK to use the Default' Click OK and things will 'work'... but you have to ignore the JPEGforLazarus one?? Who knows. Anyway end game is it comes up and has all the eye candy stuff. Blah blah blah.... Having been through that lot. If you have a look/search in/through Synaptic Package Manager then a search for 'laz' under all then you will find it with it's version number. A search for fpc will do the same but you find fpc-src under 'Converted from RPM by Alien'. Bonus points, assuming I am right/wrong, is you can use the tools to be rid and be sure (?) there is no dross left over that you did not know about in the first place. You might have a good solution with your CodeTyphon but I feel slightly disinclined to go and have a look at it. Why not bore yourself and try giving more 'useful' answers, it looks like you have in the past, and then tag your 'advert' on the end along with some reasons as to why it is 'better'.
