The menu has disappeared in ubuntu 8.04 LTS

Hi,

I installed lazarus from synaptic, the installation went well, i could
run lazarus, but the main menu in lazarus has disappeared, also there
is a message that free pascal source was not found...

But where have the menus gone, also I noticed that the dialog boxes do
not have any text on them !!!
