Ubuntu 8.10 (Latest Verision) & Lazarus Disaster lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Robster · 2009-01-04 11:35 I would like to take this opportunity to thank the developers of Lazarus. What the world needs now is a multi platform RAD. My problem is that I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and installed Lazarus from the Synaptic package manager from the Ubuntu repositories. The most reliable way to get Lazarus properly installed on Ubuntu - right?  Wrong! It was broken out of the box Lazarus could not seem to find anything it wanted from the source code to the help files. I sorted the source code problem but as soon as I fixed one problem another appeared. I got my "Hello World" program working but that is about it.   I realize that I have a steep learning curve a head of me moving from Visual Foxpro. I would feel a lot better if I got Lazarus properly installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul Ishenin · 2009-01-04 11:41 Maybe you have not installed fpc sources? Or had not pointed lazarus to that sources directory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sternas Stefanos · 2009-01-04 13:44 Or try CodeTyphon Project at: http://www.pilotlogic.com/ Look at Our Gallery: http://www.pilotlogic.com/sitejoom/index.php?option=com_phocagallery&v iew=category&id=1:CodeTyphon&Itemid=152 Have fun ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Robster · 2009-01-04 13:56 Thank you for your reply. (and thank you for you work) The fpc source was installed. (The Synaptic Manager did its job)  I right clicked on the properties form synaptic package manager to find where they were installed. I put that information into the environment -> Environment options ....etc.. I feel that you are missing my point. If Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution it should come out of the box working.  In Windows you have a lot completion. In the Mac world I have no idea.   In  Linux you are practically it.    I remember when Windows 3.1 was released  WordPerfect was the most popular word processor  Lotus 123 was the most popular spreadsheet, dBase III plus was the most popular database and Turbo Pascal was the most popular programming language. I know you do this for the love of it, but, there is a  chance that you could make it big. New people are flooding to Ubuntu everyday.   Like me they are not going to cut it on C++ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2009-01-07 10:49 You can help with this. Ubuntu has its rules regarding packaging and our timing is also not the best there is. Getting FPC and Lazarus packaged properly and on time isn't easy (and in some cases not even possible). Right now, Ubuntu has older packages simply because that's how it synchronized itself. "Out of the box" will perhaps work one day when someone decides to sacrifice enough of their free time to make better packages AND Lazarus itself gets stable with gtk2. One year or so perhaps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nyrell · 2009-01-07 18:44 I also tried to install lazarus from various repositories at first, but there were always some issues, and I believe that it is actually easier to do the installation of fpc and lazarus manually. This is how i do it: http://forum.lazarus.freepascal.org/index.php/topic,6125.0.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Leledumbo · 2009-01-08 03:37 QuoteI believe that it is actually easier to do the installation of fpc and lazarus manuallyAgree! Compiling from source is the best way, since you have a full control of how it's compiled. Perhaps with just a few library dependency errors depending on your distro. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2009-01-08 06:53 But this also won't work like described, because you use a released fpc version. I am not sure a fpc binary snapshot contains the install.sh script. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazamon · 2009-01-26 13:55 I have Ubuntu 8.10. I installed Lazarus with synaptic and configuring the enviroment options  it works great. Even more, i added the Lazarus repository to synaptic and it gets updated by ubuntu, like the other soft. Great work team.
