Font problems in Fedora 8

For some reason Lazarus (.24) doesn't seem to obey system setting for
font use (Rendering, DPI resolution); thus no aliasing is used and
fonts look real ugly when scaled up (size 20+). And it doesn't allow
using many of fonts installed in a system (they simply don't show up
in a list).

I've tried using both

Fedora-native build and the one provided on a SF - same results.

Is there anything that can be done? I have a bad eye-sight and me eyes
quickly grow tired when I use those spikey fonts...

I'm using Gnome desktop, stable branch for everything.
