Fpc 2.2.0 and Lazarus 0.9.22: will they live together? lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bart · 2007-10-12 16:00 First of all, I'm a linux newbie. Is it save to upgrade fpc (2.0.4), that is, replace 2.0.4 with 2.2.0 and still use the current stable version of Lazarus (0.9.22)? (I mean do a rpm -Uvh on the new fpc .rpm files) One might say, give it a try, but I'm not so keen on possibly f@#$ing up my Lazarus version. Bart ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2007-10-12 16:43 You will need to recompile Lazarus will fpc 2.2.0, you cannot continue to use the Lazarus rpm. There are reports that Lazarus 0.9.22 can be compiled with fpc 2.2.0. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uranellus · 2007-10-12 17:08 IMHO it is save! I managed to build lazarus-0.9.22 with fpc-2.2.0 create some rpms. But note that lazarus' rpm will require 2.0.4, so a rpm -Uvh fpc-2.2.0-0.rpm will not help if you use the official rpms. What distribution are you using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Almindor · 2007-10-12 17:30 2.2.0 can compile Lazarus .22 just fine. Even latest FPC trunk can AFAIK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bart · 2007-10-13 09:04 Alternatively, is it possible to setup Lazarus from SVN with Fpc (2.2.0 or SVN) and keep my current Lazarus 0.9.22/fpc 2.0.4, so that hey run independant from each other? I manged to set up Lazarus from SVN with fpc 2.2.0 alongside Lazarus 0.9.22/fpc 2.0.4 in Windows, but that was a PITA as you can see here and I know in windows version how to controll where (in what directory) Laz and fpc are going to be installed, so they don't mess up each other. I guess I would have to download the source for Laz and Fpc (this is something even I can do, once I've set up svn for my linux box). But then what? Build fpc and build Lazarus I guess, but how then to controll where the are "installed" (this probably is not the right word in linux) and to make this (and only this) Lazarus version I just build know that it has to use the fpc version I just built? (As a note. I tried to build an fpc from sources on windows, it built just fine, but it (fpc.exe) then complained that it could not find any unit (unless it was in the current active directory) at all, thus rendering this build almost completely useless to me. Also the source tree did not even slightly resemble the fpc source tree that comes with the win32 Lazarus binaries, which would be a problem if I wanted Laz to use this version. I don't mind experimenting, I'm not afraid of having to do things from the console, I don't care if the "unstable" versions crash or don't do what I expect. I'm only concerned that I might screw up my current stable Laz/Fpc combination or in some way mess up the package manager (rpm, I have Suse), which would then later on become a problem if I tried to install new stable versions using rpm. This is getting a rather long post, I hope I did make myself clear. I like this Laz/Fpc, and even though I'm just an amateur, I like to contribute if I can to this project (and I succeded in fixing 1 or 2 minor issues). Bart
