Trapping global keypresses

Is it possible (lazarus, under linux) to trap all keypresses that may
occur during an X session? The reason I ask is I have a barcode
reader, and I'd like to write an application that sits in the
background and monitors for barcodes and pops up when a barcode is
entered. In the Delphi days, I used a component called fisHotKey, but
it doesn't work under wine, so I'm looking for a native solution.
Anyone have any ideas?

Umm ... I think you should read XLib documentation and use it
directly. Possibly google or ask again on X11 specific forums
