Ubuntu or Fedora: can you help me? lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CortelliStefano · 2007-01-20 13:49 Hello to all the Forum, I've made a program with Lazarus under Windows using snapshot versions because I need of FPC 2.1.1 for using Field Editors. Now I'de like to pass to Linux and compile my program. I'll buy another pc with Linux. My question is: what distribution of Linux is better for install Lazarus and use it? I thought to Ubuntu or Fedora (this is my first experience with Linux), pheraps is it better Fedora as for svn are available the RPM files? Last question: where can I download a guide for install Lazarus svn on Linux (I suppose I've to install first FPC 2.1.1 from FreePascal site, then the svn version of Lazarus, is it right?)? Someone has already done that? Thank you very much if you can give me your advice for the better and FREE distribution of Linux that allows me to easy installa Lazarus Daily Snapshots with FPC 2.1.1. Best Regards. Stefano ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2007-01-20 15:33 Did yoy have a look at the wiki? Installing lazarus tells you all about installing fpc and lazarus. Getting Lazarus tells you about getting the svn version or any  other version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CortelliStefano · 2007-01-20 16:22 Thanks very much for your fast repy, little by little I am studying the Wiki documentation. My main problem now is to choose the best Linux distribution for using with Lazarus and FPC 2.1.1. I've read a lot of Linux Installation Messeges on this forum, and about Linux distributions with Google, and I've noted that sometimes Alien doesn't reach to convert the RPM file. But, above all, my question is your personal advice, the main use of the new pc with Linux will be just for working with Lazarus FPC 2.1.1, what is the best choice? I cannot use Lazarus Official Realeases, but only Daily Snapshots and this is the first experience with Linux for me, so I'm a little worried. If someone that use Snapshot Versions of Lazarus with FPC 2.1.1 might tell me what distribution of Linux use, or anyway what is better for use with Lazarus Snapshots, I'll be grateful. Sorry for my bad English and thank you again, Stefano ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2007-01-20 16:32 I'm using Fedora. I know at least one of the developpers is using Debian. So Ubuntu should work as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CortelliStefano · 2007-01-22 19:04 Thanks very much for your always fast reply. So I've understood either Fedora or Ubuntu should work, but probably Fedora is then the most used and tested with Lazarus, if it's so I think it's better I choose Fedora. By the way, I've started to study the Wiki Documentation for installing Lazarus on Linux and I'm a bit worried because in Daily Snapshots Download Page there is no package for FPC 2.1.1 for Linux, while it's available for Win and MacOs. I've found only FPC 2.1.1 sources and only on the Free Pascal site: http://www.freepascal.org/develop.var but I've not found a RPM or other packages, so is it really necessary to compile the sources and then installing Lazaurs (of which RPM are available, this should be easy)? On Wiki I've found only that for compiling the sources about Free BSD: $MAKE all OPT='-gl -O3p3'  PP=/path/to/startingcompiler-name-ppc386 (/path/to/ can be omitted when ppc386 is in the path) ($MAKE is make on linux and gmake on BSD) $MAKE install PP=compiler/ppc386 PREFIX=$THEPREFIX (THEPREFIX= usually is /usr/lcoal, but e.g. on NetBSD it is /usr/pkg for ports) Create a symlink:   ln -s $THEPREFIX/lib/fpc/2.0.2/ppc386 $THEPREFIX/bin/ppc386      install sourceinstall PREFIX=$THEPREFIX I ask that because I'm a bit worried, I'm new on Linux and this is new for me. I precise I'm only an accountancy and I've written my accounting program with Lazarus, so I'm afraid I don't know if I'll be able to install Lazarus on Linux. Is there an easier way to install Lazarus with FPC 2.1.1? Or can I find a steep-by steep guide for installing FPC 2.1.1? Thank you if you can give me an advice. Best regards, Stefano
