Ubuntu (Debian) - Install Issue lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DuncW · 2006-08-30 00:41 Hello, I converted *.rpm's to *.deb files using Alien - but had problems. I then tried installing tar file and compiling lazarus - had to set up a number of links but it ended up generating some other error that had me stumped. Since I had now set up links for various things, I tried installing from the lazarus...deb file again and it worked without error. The applications menu now has a lazarus item but I can't say whether the "deb" install did this or my attempts to make the application. Anyway, with no errors to report, I tried clicking on the menu item and it gives an error "startlazarus" - Could not launch menu item. Details: Failed to execute child process "startlazarus" (No such file or directory) I am stumped. I cannot find where lazarus has been installed and I certainly can't find "startlazarus". Can someone please advise? Many thanks in advance. Duncan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r000 · 2006-08-30 01:55 hi! startlazarus hat got to be in /usr/lib/lazarus, I use debian and it's in that place. I tried to installed lazarus using allienized rpm but I got an error. Today, I installed lazarus in fedoracore 4 and it' ok. bye ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samps · 2006-08-30 10:17 Duncan, I've got Lazarus installed on Ubuntu 6.0.6 (originally installed on Hoary, updated to Breezy, to Dapper), using the installation procedure described here: http://www.howtoforge.com/lazarus_ubuntu with adaptations made for version of Lazarus and 32-bit CPU. It works any bit as well as I hoped. Samps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DuncW · 2006-08-30 21:22 Hi Samps and r000, Thank you both very much for your replies. I've been guddling around trying to sort things. r000 - yes, you are spot on. I've found lazarus and "startlazarus". I just couldn't find it last night so it was obviously time to give up and get some sleep. Samps - with regard to the page you suggest, I had that open as a tab along with about 10 other pages from this forum with different tips and suggestions. Revisiting it now that I've found startlazarus, it seems to be looking for 1.2 versions when I have 2.0 versions of everything so I (rather clumsily) set links to point 1.2 requirements to 2.0 files. It gets so far then reports this error: Code: [Select]./startlazarus: symbol lookup error: ./startlazarus: undefined symbol: gdk_root_window I thought I'd return to my lazarus compile directory and I get lots of symbol lookup errors when I run make. I should point out that when I was following the guide samps suggests, I can't execute Code: [Select]sudo apt-get install libgdk-pixbuf-dev I get the error Code: [Select]Couldn't find package libgdk-pixbuf-dev I'm stumped. For your information, I write code in Delphi but am very keen on writing for multi-platform use. I've just changed my PC so spent the weekend re-installing things. Previously, I had Suse 10.1 linux as a dual boot with XP-Pro. It took me a wee while with a bit of help from these forums but I got lazarus installed no problem, I have another PC networked to it with an internet connection and I had to pretty much disable every bit of security to get it to access the internet. So while Suse worked no problem, I couldn't be bothered with all the hassle and ubuntu looked simple so thought I'd give that a try. Really, you have to guddle around with things to learn how they work and I'm hoping to learn linux by using it - but still do most of my coding in windows in Delphi (and then compile in lazarus in windows and then in linux). Anyway, any advice on what I can do to sort lazarus on ubuntu would be appreciated. I struggle to understand why installation on linux is so difficult when the compiled code can apparently run on any installation of linux. Thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Duncan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zorba · 2006-08-30 21:41 I run debian by way of Kanotix, so not very familiar with ubuntu...but if you have synaptic package manager then you can search for libgdk- pixbuf-dev or equivelant. otherwise "apt-cache search libgdk-pixbuf" provided you have apt-cache. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DuncW · 2006-08-30 22:53 Thanks Zorba. apt-cache search returns nothing - however, synaptic works - have found reference to some of the 1.2 libraries previously mentioned by not ..pixbuf.. Half-thinking of PCLinuxOS - I've never had any fortune at all trying to work with Mandrake itself - but at least I think Mandrake (or Mandriva) is based on Red Hat so installation of lazarus should be more straightforward..? I don't know. You realise how good Windows is when you try using linux. May be linux is better as a conceptual entity but you don't get this hassle trying to install anything on Windows. No offence intended. Many, many thanks again for taking the time to help. Duncan None taken. Duncan, I just had a search in Synaptic and found that libgdk-pixbuf-dev is indeed installed on my installation. Thank you very much. I've now got lazarus both compiled from the make command and up-and-running! I spent most of the day gearing myself up for a PCLinuxOS install...phew. Ya beezer! Thanks to yourself, Zorba and r000 for your time, patience and help. I can hopefully get coding now.   Kind regards, Duncan
