Suse10.1, Gnome, Non anti-aliased fonts

The fonts in Lazarus  Suse10.1 and Gnome are large and blocky.  I
found the same with Fedora Core 5 and gnome.  Is there a way to get
anti-aliased fonts working in Lazarus?  I've tried changing the gnome
theme but it dosen't seem to make a difference.
