Dont confuse the use of fpc and fpcsrc with lazarus lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lazybugger · 2006-01-20 01:54 Hi, I am relatively new to installing lazarus but I've got it sussed on Gentoo and Suse-9.2 One thing that is not at all obvious is the very different use of fpc and fpcsrc. The source is not primarily used to compile fpc as you would automatically expect. In the context of installing lazarus (as opposed to just fpc installing to have a pascal compiler) fpc binary package is installed in order to build lazarus itself. If you start lazarus in this state you will get a waring about missing fpc source that you ignore at your peril. You will be able to add std components to a form and even compile and run a trivial project but you wont be able to do much more. If you dblclick a button to add and event handler you'll get an error. You need fpcsrc to go any further. You can install the source in a location remote from where fpc is installed. You do not need to rebuild fpc or lazarus with the new source. Just edit the environment settings to indicate where the source is and everything falls into place. There should maybe be some mention of this in the install notes. Come to think if it there should be some install notes   Hope that clears up some misunderstandings and saves some time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vincent Snijders · 2006-01-20 07:27 Feel free to improve (or rewrite in a new page) the Installing Lazarus page.
