Problems installing on SuSE 10 lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ches · 2005-11-30 19:10 I think I have the right mix of files now:- fpc-2.0.1-050923.i386.rpm fpcsrc-2.0.1-050923.i386.rpm lazarus-0.9.10-0.i386.rpm so ran all three from Konsole with rpm -Uvh in front of them First two - no problems. Last one - failed and gave several dependency warnings. I have cleared all but two by using Yast to add packages from the install disc. These remain:- gtk*-devel is needed by lazarus-0.9.10-0 gdk-pixbuf-devel is needed by lazarus-0.9.10-0 From the install disc I have installed gdk-pixbuf, gdk-pixbuf-gnome and gtk2.devel, but this does not cure the above problems. Can anyone please help? Ches ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2005-11-30 20:24 I googled and found this. First link should help, I hope (I'm not a SuSE user.) On the SuSE FTP there are some files as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2005-11-30 20:35 Quote from: "matthijs"On the SuSE FTP there are some files as well. Remember to install the patches as well. There was a security risk discovered in the GTK* and GDK-pixbuf-* files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-12-01 22:14 Thanks for the advice, but I seem to be getting nowhere. I have whittled the Lazarus dependencies down to gdk-pixbuf-devel  and gtk+-devel which rpm -Uvh...... says are not available. Already installed are gtk2 and gtk2-devel (is this not gtk+-devel?) gdk-pixbuf gdk-pixbuf-gnome I have downloaded gdk-pixbuf-devel-0.22.0-77.i586.rpm from the SuSE site. When I rpm -Uvh this I get gtk-devel is needed by .... (what's wrong with gtk2-etc?) I feel I am running round in circles getting nowhere! I cannot find gtk-devel anywhere. The SuSE site lists it but it does not appear to be available for download - looks like it is obsolete as its version number is 1.something. I am at a loss. Please can someone tell me what to do to get Lazarus running. As a side note, I installed Lazarus on Windows XP and it worked first time with no problems. Why can't I do this on Linux? Ches ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glober · 2005-12-02 06:47 Simply put, "Dependency Hell", That's why I run Gentoo. A Debian based Linux system like Ubuntu would also not give you such headaches. But that does you no good. A couple of suggestions: 1) Install SMART, from: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm- navigation.php?cat=System/smart/ , SMART wiki at: http://www.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Smart . SMART apparently can use the APT system among others to get it's files. The biggest problem may be to set it up to point to all the different repositories if you don't know where they are. 2) I don't know if it's possible on Suse but you could try installing URPMI, and use that to install your RPM's. It does a better job with dependencies. HTH. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- matthijs · 2005-12-02 07:20 Google really is your friend. Enter gtk-devel suse as search criterium and you will find this link. But as glober said: A tool which sorts your dependencies, downloads and install them, might be handy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glober · 2005-12-03 18:28 This may be of interest. An article with instructions on how to add repository sources to YaST: http://desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2703022234.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-12-04 01:00 Hi, for SuSE 10: As mentioned sometimes YaST / rpm isn't the easiest way to go. Use packages, now apt (known from debian) is available with SuSE 10. After installing apt with YaST. run a root's shell. > apt-get install gdk-pixbuf-devel - and - > apt-get install gtk-devel (may prompt it's recent) > apt-get install gtk2-devel (maybe not really necessary) [last both are in YaST, too. Don't know why not pixbuf-devel also...] Note: As far as I know "gtk+" is just "gtk" in SuSE. That's why you can ignore deps in rpm: > rpm -Uvh --nodeps lazarus-0.9.10-0.i386.rpm That's how I did it, Johannes ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-12-06 20:38 Thanks for the tips everyone. Have downloaded gtk-1.2.10-721.src.rpm from mattijs's link (only file available). I presume this is a source rpm and not a binary - should I do anything with it first to get the binary? Glober's link suggests that I should rpmbuild it first and then install. What are the commands for this? The link appears to be missing a line right at the critical point! I presume the apt stuff requires a telephone link, but the computer I am using to learn Linux has no modem, so that is not an option. APT requires an internet connection, either through phone or broadband, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ledster · 2005-12-17 20:40 Hi all, Just to put a closure on this, I now have a fully functional Lazarus/fpc. :>) "Dependency hell" was hell! Not helped by me incorrectly assuming that the + in gtk+ was a wild card. Turns out there is (are) a gtk+ and gtk+-devel as well as gtk and gtk2 - how confusing! Naturally I installed the latest version and then found out Lazarus/fpc wanted an earlier version, so had to remove it and install version 1.2 (I think it was). Final problem was a linking error "could not find -lglib". A trip to faq sorted that out - glib-devel had not been installed. A real steep learning curve, but I have enjoyed the challenge and learnt a lot. Many thanks for all the help and advice. Ches
