Problem Installing/Starting Lazarus lazarus / 1-Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blizzz · 2005-10-25 17:34 Hi there, first of all - I am afraid - i have to say that i am new to both Linux and Lazarus, so forgive me A long time I tried out to install Lazarus on my SuSE 9.1. It took a while until it succeeded, with the help of another Lazarus user. I chose the same packages as he has done, which are: fpc-2.0.0-0.i586.rpm gtk2fpc-1.0.2-fpc1.0.7_laz.20030301.i386.rpm fpcsrc-2.0.0-0.i386.rpm lazarus-0.9.8-fpc_2.0.0.i386.rpm It works well on his computer, but he is using SuSE 9.3. Anyway, by starting the application, it quits directily. The windows are shortly to see and thats' it. The shell gives me a warning and two error, i.e.: [WARNING] ** Multibyte character encodings (like UTF8) are not ** [WARNING] ** supported at the moment.                          ** [WARNING] ** For full keyboard event support, make sure that   ** [WARNING] ** the LANG environment var has no UTF8              ** Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)   serial 4737 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0 Gdk-ERROR **: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)   serial 4738 error_code 9 request_code 62 minor_code 0 I am a bit frustrated after some days of trying and doing.... Hope anyone can help me?! Might it be a matter too, that i am using a Notebook (IBM Thinkpad T22)? Btw: i registered, but i got no confirmation email, so i have to write as a guest. Regards, Blizzz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anonymous · 2005-11-04 10:40 I have a similar problem on my notebook. After Lazarus is completely started (including showing Form Designer for a short moment) it closes with message "Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)". This happens under KDE. Lazarus runs without problems under e.g. IceWM on the same account. All other apps I've tested like Mozillla, Gimp, Kylix, OpenOffice etc have no problems on the same notebook under KDE. So the problem seems to be a combination of limited resources, more resource hungry WM and Lazarus needing too many resources. I seem to have the same with Mepis 3.4. I've installed: fpc_2.0.1-50924_i386.deb fpcsrc_2.0.1-50924_i386.deb lazarus_0.9.10-1_i386.deb (debs created by alien as per the Lazarus FAQ). Ideas? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc · 2006-06-27 11:36 One fo the reasons for these messages can be: * Pallette based graphics, ie. running your x in 8bpp. * The theme you use, try using a non graphic based theme. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chris.kirkpatrick · 2006-08-03 05:12 I have had the BadAlloc error mentioned above when using Ubuntu 6.0 and Mepis 6 (RC1 or RC2) which are based on the Ubuntu kernel. Tried using other (lighter) window managers  such as XFCE but same problem as with KDE. New installation of official release Mepis 6.0 final (ie nor Beta or release candidate) - now Lazarus runs without problem. Whatever pathological things were happening seem to have been fixed in the official release. One further idea - this reply has just been posted on the lazarus distribution list: >> > kirkpatc@4[lazarus]$ ./lazarus >> > TApplication.IconChanged - TODO: convert this message...no >> implementation in >> > gtk or win32 >> > NOTE: editor options config file not found - using defaults >> > NOTE: miscellaneous options file not found - using defaults >> > NOTE: codetools config file not found - using defaults >> > NOTE: help options config file not found - using defaults >> > >> > snip >> > >> > Gdk-ERROR **: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) >> >  serial 7630 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0 >> >> This indicates not enough memory or too little colors in your display. >> With Mepis this is caused by the installed GTK Theme. Take the standard theme and it will work. I'm not sure whats the name of the theme that causes this trouble, but I've seen this on various other Debian based distros. Hope this helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aron.petrucci · 2006-08-16 15:43 Hello everybody, This GDK seems very crazy.:-). If I start lazarus by console (or by gnome or KDE) it works well. I write the program, I can build it. But when I try to run it, Lazarus is closed.
