How to programmatically capture the visual contents of the screen and
save them into a jpg or bmp file? This seems to be a challenging
problem on Linux (c.f. Windows).

I use cygwin.
1. run cygwin
2. cygwin$> startx
3. cygwin$> xhost + ipaddr of Linux machine
4. cygwin$> telnet to Linux
5. Linux$> set DISPLAY=cywinpc-ip:0.0
6. Linux$> lazarus

You wanna take a pic of your Desktop? Start Gimp, in the File menu
there's screenshot.
