Windows is made by a single company Microsoft and you have to buy a
license to use it.
Linux is OpenSource and comes in distributions, you can get free
versions by downloading them or as CD's.
The most popular distributions are: Mandrake, Red Hat Fedora, Debian,
Slackware, Gentoo, ... and many other distributions. You can also buy
licenses for some distributions for support etc.
If you can download 3 CD's i recommend getting Mandrake 10 or maybe
you like Fedora or other distribution.
Mandrake and Red Hat distributions also come with multimedia
applications and many GUI tools to allow a smooth transition from
Windows to Linux. The installation is quite different from XP.
You can configure a dual booting system and mount all windows drives
including ntfs.
