pentesting on thinkpad lainchan / sec ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rvnt · 2022-07-07 15:03 realistically, can i use an old thinkpad for pentesting? i want an older one that i can libreboot/coreboot and modify accordingly with more ram/storage and all that.would it be a waste or is an old thinkpad actually feasible as a pentesting machine? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Delilah · 2022-07-07 15:15 >>19629 I wouldn't want to use it to run large brute-forcing tasks or anything similarly demanding, but should be more than fine for the most part. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jens Hansen · 2022-07-07 16:06 >>19629 yup long time ago when I was a kid with a soykafty laptop I used free tier AWS to crack WPA2 since my laptop was so soykaf, used my fathers credit card for free tier AWS soykaf was cash ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lady Jessica · 2022-07-08 19:23 >19629 how old are we talking? a t430 can be corebooted, and that should be fine for enumaration but bruteforcing may take a while depending on what you are doing. Especially if you want to use something like kali in a vm instead of bare metal. If you want to go with something older like a t60 you may have a hard time. I'd recommend to settle with coreboot and either a second or third gen i5 or i7. If you are using this machine for pentesting, it shouldn't be your main/personal machine anyways, and some pentesting software is proprietary, so you may be fine with just coreboot instead of libreboot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Boris Grishenko · 2022-07-09 05:49 >>19629 Yes, but don't expect good performance when cracking a cipher, encrypted file or a PMKID soykaf ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Judge Fang · 2022-07-09 23:00 t440p has a relatively good CPU performance and you can install coreboot on it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mario Rossi · 2022-10-11 19:09 Should be fine. I'd use something pre-2008, because I'm paranoid, but it's up to you. I'd recommend a T61, if you're like me. Mostly around $200, can upgrade to 8 gigs of ram, and the processors are 64bit unlike the T60. If you don't care about IME, do this >>19650.
