More on KRAB and the IA

The Internet Archive is yet again having trouble.  This comes mere
moments after I posted my last phlog post, about Yesterday's Tomorrow
and how the content is uploaded to the Internet Archive and a podcast
feed available on divarin.net.  More frustrating for me is that the
wayback machine is broken which means my journey through the
snapshots of www.krabarchive.com is halted for the moment.

I have started to put some of the media I've pulled from there into a
podcast feed, similar to Yesterday's Tomorrow.  This is also
available on https://divarin.net.  There isn't much there right now
and I can't add any more until the IA's wayback machine is working
again.

It's like the universe is conspiring to bury this KRAB archive.

What I find more than a little frustrating is the utter lack of
communication coming out of IA.  Over 24 hours of downtime and not a
single announcement.  The IA web page is working, you can pull up the
home page and the MP3 files I uploaded are coming through so it's not
like they couldn't add a little note at the top of their page saying
"The wayback machine is experiencing technical difficulties" or
something.  Nothing on their mastodon and that's as close to social
media as I get and even then only when I'm looking for a specific
announcement.

But this incident reinforces what I put in my last KRAB-FM phlog
post:  The Internet Archive is awesome, I love that it exists, I love
what it's mission is, but it is *one* site.  It can be gone tomorrow
(a part of it is, at least temporarily, gone today).  The only sure
way to preserve anything is through duplication.  We need IA mirrors
and we need other archives.  The web site www.krabarchive.com was
supposed to be one such thing; a small archive purpose built for one
topic.  But its gone and it's ghost, in the wayback machine, is all
that's left.  And now it's in purgatory, at least for the time being.

I'm kicking myself for not mirroring that snapshot when I had the
chance, for trusting that I could always come back and sift through
at my leisure, to hand pick just the things I personally find
interesting.  I should have fired up a wget script and just
duplicated the whole KRAB archive site.
