Yesterday's Tomorrow is Now (Live)

Okay the title is a bit weird I'll explain it in a bit.

The short version:  The podcast format restoration I've been working
on is now available live at https://divarin.net
The page isn't much to look at right now.  I kind of plan on using
this site to host multiple content feeds, right now there's two you
can subscribe to: "Yesterday's Tomorrow" and "KRAB-FM".

The long version:  Yesterday's Tomorrow is my name for a collection
of four of the shows which are currently available on
https://town.hall.org, these are:

Computers, Freedom, and Privacy*
Communications Revolution
Tech Nation
Geek of the Week

*: "Computers, Freedom, and Privacy" wasn't a regular radio show, it
was a conference in which some early 90's internet discussion took
place so there's only a handful of "episodes" for this.

Of all of the content on town.hall these four deliver a very
interesting historical perspective on early to mid 90's internet
development.  It is a look back at pioneers engineering (what was to
them) tomorrow's internet.

So that makes it "today" right?  Isn't "Yesterday's Tomorrow" just
"today"?  Well, not necessarily.  A lot of the topics covered include
things that never came to fruition.  So it's interesting to see
technologies that were thought to be "the next big thing" but
weren't, internet multi-casting is a great example.


Why a podcast?

Although I've enjoyed listening to this stuff on the web site in .au
audio format, it's not that great to be stuck in front of a computer
listening to it.  It would be nice if you could listen to it while on
a walk, or drifting off to sleep, or driving.  But good luck getting
a modern smart phone to work with .au which is a very old audio
format.  I've converted everything to MP3 and uploaded them to the
Internet Archive.

The podcast RSS feeds hosted on divarin.net allows you to subscribe
to it in a podcast app or any other RSS application which supports
audio.  The audio files themselves will stream directly from the
Internet Archive.


Still a work in progress

Although all mp3 files have been uploaded, the work of adding
metadata and descriptions for each episode is not yet entirely done.
There's still a handful of Geek of the Week episodes and quite a few
more Tech Nation episodes yet to go.  Since I have a lot of irons in
the fire right now I can't really do it all in one session so I'm
continuing my one-episode-a-day routine which has got me this far but
now I can skip these steps: download AU file, convert to MP3 file,
upload MP3 file.  Since all that is done I can move on to just
creating the gopher page for today's episode and then adding the
episode to the RSS feed.

Currently the episodes publication date is whatever date I processed
that episode.  Once I'm done I might decide to change all of those
publication dates to group episodes from each show contiguously or I
might set it to whatever date that episode originally aired.  Or I
might do neither and just leave it the way it is.
